Also, I am not into the Pakistan travel myth, which it is. There were most definitely warnings and International calling was restricted, at various times, but I have never seen any credible evidence that Americans were strictly forbidden.
Still, it would be easier to travel under and Indonesian passport with less scrutiny from Pakistan.
Someone who I never can remember exactly (it might come to me) said his brother went to Paki around that time; and it was difficult to get a visa as an American, you had to have some business/etc to do it. It wasn’t easy but it could be done.
I wonder how a 21 or whatever he was year old guy with no reason to go could get one. Of course, he was the “protegee” or whatever of the rich Muslim guy whose name I also can’t remember, Chadoo?? So even if he had a US passpart strings could have been easily pulled/money changed hands.
But it has also been said that the State Dept (FOI?) said there is no record of him having a US passport until he was a (state?) senator.
