The Iranian military announced Monday that it tested a new air-to-surface missile during war game exercises under way in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Gen. Mohammad Allawi said in a Monday interview with the semiofficial Fars News Agency that the missiles were tested as part of an effort to examine the abilities of the Iranian military and their missile systems.
"The new missiles have been loaded onto the army's fighter jets with changes and updates in their parts," he said. "They had a fully successful performance today."
The general added the missile system was designed to enhance the ability to strike naval targets.
The Iranian military announced during the weekend that it equipped its fighter jets with "sophisticated electronic warfare systems."
The weapons display is part of an 8-day war games exercise launched Wednesday in the Persian Gulf. Iranian submarine and air force units joined their navy counterparts in the maneuvers.
Military officials last week said they started production of an air defense system meant to strike incoming cruise missiles.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps had a similar training exercise in April.
