We need to start forming our own private schools en masse, to compete with public schools and provide a good education for parents who cannot home school.

One can only hope.

Someone who thinks that evil parents should not have total control over how to raise their kids, but rather have the state have oversight, deserves it.

For the record, I was mocking the attitude of the other side with that sarcastic quote, not reflecting my own.

And I was playing along.

LongElegantLegs,

My apologies, I read your post too quickly; please forgive me for calling you a Troll. What I thought I read was, "…why "should" I be able to teach my kids at home?" I thought it was sarcasm, which it would be if what I thought I read were true; but it was not. The question is really, “why shouldn't’t I?” and you should.

What I meant by stating you’re a “home school dropout” would only be true if the sarcasm were true. In reading your post, if "should” were there, then one would think that the statement would infer that anyone who did not have a diploma or a GED was a dropout. My post was to address anyone who would think that home schoolers have a high number of teenagers who would “dropout” before they have been educated to the degree of a complete government high school graduate here in CA. If this were true, that person would have to be blind to the fact that government high schools have a much higher degree of “dropouts (those who do not get a complete high school education)” than do home schoolers.

In fact, home school educated teens have a far superior education, and a much higher percentage of them go to college afterward than do government school kids; you cannot call these teens "dropouts" if they continue on to college.

“Homeschooled kids do better academically than commies do.”

Prove it. (warning, a lesson on self-selecting statistics follows your answer)

Where do you get off calling kids that aren’t homeschooled “commies” anyway?

“Homeshooled kids are always at the top and anyone who disagrees is a liberal liar.”

Ok, homeboy, prove it. Seriously. Prove it. You need a lesson in statistics.

“Compared with other students, homeschoolers scored higher than the national average on this year’s ACT, a national standardized test used to gauge educational development and college readiness. “

Ok, so you posted “proof”.

You are comparing a statistical pool of kids that does not include urban and minority school districts.

If you compare to a like statistical pool to homeschoolers you’ll find there is no difference.

Homeschooling is fine, but to use a reason like
“they’ll do better on the ACT” is an incorrect reason, because it isn’t true.

They’ll do better than a statistical pool that includes minority and disadvantaged kids - but that doesn’t make them do better individually.

Self-selecting statistics designed to make homeschool parents feel good about themselves.

I’ve seen that link before. If you know anything about statistics, let me tell you that when I studied standardized testing, I remember that the standard deviation in an ACT test is about 2.25.

Which means that the difference between a 21.1 and a 22.5 is miniscule and means absolutely nothing. I admit it looks good on paper and certainly SOUNDS good, but in reality, it’s less than a fart in a hurricane.

Homeschoolers own public school kids hands down.

It’s life.

Deal with it.

“These statistics point to one conclusion: homeschooling works. “

No, these statistics point to the following conclusion only: The Home Schooling organization wants parents to think that their kids are smarter because they are homeschooled. None of the statistics you listed prove that.

I’m not against homeschooling. If you do it you must do so for whatever reason you have, not because someone compares a group of middle class kids with a group of mixed middle class and low-achieving minority/urban and tells you how smart your kid is because they do better than low-achieving urban minorities.

“Homeschoolers own public school kids hands down.”

Now metmom, I’ve taken you to school on this before. How soon you forget.

It is not true. It is self-selecting statistics.

Deal with that. Homeschool if you wish, but be honest about why you do it.

This disbelief from a guy who calls kids “commies”? That is unbelievable.

My apologies — I should have looked at the Executive summary for the year in which these stats were released.

In 2008 the S.D. ranges from 4 to 6.4 depending on the subject. The 50th percentile was a 21; the 75th was a 24.

Statistically in several ways, there is no difference between a 21.2 and a 22.5.

One stat that was significant. African American students - 17.1, Asian/Pacific - 24.4. Now THAT’s a difference!

That's grandma and public school is full of commies teaching your darling to fit in like a good worker bee.

“That’s grandma and public school is full of commies teaching your darling to fit in like a good worker bee.”

Even more unbelievable. You called kids “commies”, grandma, and you should know better by now.

I didn’t post those statistics to show homeschoolers were “smarter” than anyone else. I posted it to show another poster that it has been successful (in response to her arguments against homeschooling).

I do not think my son is smarter than anyone else but I do think he is reaching his full potential. I have seen him in both settings - one he was falling behind, the other he is getting ahead. And the only difference is that he had a customized learning environment. Same kid, same brain, different environment. I’ve seen it over and over in other kids we know.

I am not one to push homeschooling for everyone, but I will defend why it works for many, many people. If you have statistics that prove otherwise, I’d be glad to see those too.

If you don’t like “commies” how about “animals”? Because some of the ones I went to were total zoos.
