Worst-Paying College Degrees

There's no denying the value of a college education: According to recent U.S. Census surveys, the median salary for college grads is more than $20,000 higher than that of people with only a high school diploma. And the unemployment rate for people with bachelor's degrees is almost half the rate for people without.

But some degrees are worth more than others, as PayScale.com shows in its 2010 report on the earning power of bachelor's degrees.

Gov Christie thinks teacher is one of the highest paid and wants to limit their pay negotiations.

In New Jersey, it probably does command a pretty stiff salary.

I was disappointed to see "Regulatory Science" not on the list. Back when I was doing radio in Little Rock, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff proudly trumpeted that they were starting the nation's first Regulatory Science degree program. That was back in Klinton's day, of course.

There is nothing wrong with people gaining and education simply for the sake of having an education in that field.

Not everyone goes to school to get a diploma for employment.

Nor should they.

I just retired with 31 years as a power plant operator. The pay and benifits are GREAT! I still miss the money, but don’t miss working with the “Plant manager from hell”!

Part of it is because employers don’t expect people to be able to do much with a modern H.S. education. College is the new H.S., for many of these degrees.

Yeah, I think that today's associate's degree is the equivalent of a high school diploma of 30 years ago.

If employers were wise, they'd develop a standardized test, something like the SAT, that could be given to high school graduates that would score them on important subject material such as math, english, science, history, and perhaps vocational ability. I can see such a test superceding the high school diploma at some point, given that the high school diploma is no indication that the graduate has actually mastered 12th grade material.

It’s hard for many to imagine, but sometimes people go into a relatively low-paying career simply because they enjoy the work itself. Social work, in particular, offers extremely gratifying rewards and excruciating pain in cases where their work is for naught.

And, if the students did anticipate more worldly unmet success, such as in drama, they can convert those skills to other careers.

At $40K a year, and massive loans to pay off, that can be a tough pill to swallow.

I don’t see Women’s Studies at the bottom of that list and shouldn’t it be? Also, I get a kick out of the teachers who get doctorates in education so they can play principal and get called “Dr” for the world’s easiest PhD.

At least where I got my doctorate at the Univ. of Calif., a person getting a doctorate in education didn't get a PhD, they got an EdD. I've heard of a couple other doctorates which sound rather laughable, as well.

I think studying women is wonderful. I’ve been doing it for almost fifty years and have found it very rewarding. Confusing at times, but rewarding.

Good to see a few power plant folks. Never operated one, but I spent 3 or 4 years as a relay tech, and got to work in a couple of plants in northeast Ohio. Miss those days, I can tell you that.

It’s a pretty awesome sight, walking onto the turbine floor for the first time and seeing a 600 MW turbine/generator 50 feet away, just humming along.
