(MEMPHIS 5/7/2010) -- The Shelby County Office of Preparedness announced Friday, a third shelter will open at the Hollywood Community Center for storm survivors.

The Ed Rice Community Center on North Watkins is at capacity. There are about 150 people there, 50 will be moved to the Hollywood location once it's up and running.

Officials at the Emergency Operations Center in Memphis say about 60 residents in Millington are staying at a shelter located near the Millington Jetport. Sign Up For ALERTS From Us

Several roads remain closed: Sullivan, Kerrville, Osborntown between Godwin and Moose, and Brunswick between Idaville and Tracy Road.

We're told two lanes of Poplar Avenue between Massey and Kirby will remain closed through next week as crews make repairs.

The Office of Preparedness will hold another briefing Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the operations center.

Earlier in the day, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate toured West Tennessee. Many storm survivors have been anxious to see FEMA in their neighborhoods. The flooding in Tennessee was so wide spread, many worried FEMA would forget about Memphis, Millington, Dyersburg and other areas hit in the Mid-South.

Fugate says folks here should feel reassured, FEMA is well aware they are struggling. "We want to be sure everyone here in West Tennessee understands we know it's bad, we're on hand and we know," he said.

Fugate says storm survivors should call 1-800-621-FEMA to set up an appointment for an inspector to meet them at their damaged home or apartment.

By the way, has the President even mentioned this? Oh that’s right it’s fly over country, mostly conservative, mostly Christian, he won’t mention it.

NO! but then I don't watch the national news, barely the local to much propaganda. I read FR post. I get more news here than any where else. And the propaganda gets debunked!

Me too!! I do watch FoxNews often but, hadn’t heard one word on there. If O has spoken about it at all, I haven’t heard it. I can only handle MSNBC and CNN for a few minutes at a time every now and again. And usually only when hubby says, let’s see what MSNBC or CNN is saying about this. Gag to much to watch longer than that.

NSA Mid-South Begins Recovery Effort From Flood
5/7/10

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (SW) Ronda Spaulding, Naval Support Activity Mid-South Public Affairs
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) — After a May 1 flood caused the evacuation of almost 300 families and military personnel on duty, Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South has begun the recovery process in Millington, Tenn.

During the flooding, more than 200 people were rescued by boat without a single injury.

Capt. Doug McGowen, NSA Mid-South commanding officer, credits focused preparation by his staff on emergency management with their ability to provide effective response and coordination of community assets for successful evacuation and rescue efforts. Outstanding partnerships with the community, tenant commands and the public private venture (PPV) housing partner were key to meeting the immediate needs of displaced families.

“We had support rolling in as soon as the flood waters subsided. Navy Region Midwest, Navy Installations Command and Forest City provided exactly the support we needed, when we needed it,” said McGowen. “On the ground, the cooperation and teamwork were inspiring. Mid-South and tenant command Sailors worked alongside Navy and Army Reservists, Defense Department civilians and our PPV partners to ensure our families were taken care of. Even though their own homes might have suffered some damage and their families might have been displaced, these men and women have come together to insure Naval Support Activity Mid-South recovers as quickly as possible. Their actions are consistent with what we do every day - supporting the fleet, the fighter, and the family.”

As the immediate needs of the families were being addressed, attention turned to assessing the condition of the installation and beginning the clean up and recovery.

“Getting our families and Sailors into permanent housing is our top priority,” said McGowen. “As we execute that plan, we are concurrently conducting a comprehensive clean-up and remediation program for effected buildings throughout the installation. We are focused on getting critical infrastructure critical to supporting our Sailors around the globe.”

NSA Mid-South serves as the Navy’s human resources center of excellence. The more than 40 tenant commands, including Navy Personnel Command and Navy Recruiting Command, manage a sailor’s career from recruitment through retirement and support critical family readiness programs.
