To: little jeremiah
I have various and sundry pitch pipes lying about, but most of the time I just tune by ear. My sense of E, A and D are pretty spot-on, and as you know, if you get one string in tune, you can tune the others from there. My bass amp has a built-in tuner, and I have to admit to cheating and using it, but it won't do me a bit of good WTSHTF!

I can tune if one string is good. I often play by myself, so it doesn’t matter if I’m exactly on or not, but with others, I need to be exact.

I also have a harmonium (small Indian style pump organ) but they’re never on standard tuning. So sometimes I tune to that if someone else can play it. Or someone else plays guitar and I can play the harmonium. Wish I could do both at once.
