20 Things You Will Need To Survive When The Economy Collapses And The Next Great Depression Begins

Michael Snyder

(This is a guest post from The Economic Collapse Blog.)

Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression. But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen. The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes.

Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that. Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy. All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge. So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family? Do you have a plan?

[snip]

Are you prepared?

Heheh - I was a pretty severe teenage alcoholic. Since age 20 I don’t touch the stuff. Also I have taken a vow. Even one teaspoon hits my liver like a mule kick.

"This kind of talk looks sillier and sillier when it increasingly looks like we won’t even have a double dip recession, let alone a depression."

You're so smart, why do you even waste your time with us.
Never mind, I see you're a newbie from New York.

"What is the shelf life of anti biotics? is it possible to stock up?"

I do. I get mine here without a prescription and store them at 34 degrees F.
I've always had good results.

Really? You feel it in your liver? I didn’t think you would feel anything except from your kidneys.

Not arguing. Honest question. I have always wondered about that.

grave yard digger is going to be a hell of a skill

If things get that bad, the grave digger might do better as a butcher.... just sayin'.

One of my favorite things I have not on the list is a BB gun with 10s of thousands of BBs and pellets for small game.

Got the big stuff too but I see my Daisy as invaluable.

My 13 year old daughter is target practicing down the hall as I type.

Well, I haven’t drunk any beer in 40 years but have had medicinal tinctures made with alcohol. If I don’t dilute them with hot water or if I take a whole teaspoon, it kicks my lower abdomen and stomach area - I think it is the liver - and plus I feel very woozy for about 20 minutes. Pain, too. I did almost die of hepatitis A as a kid, and then became an alcoholic. I am sure my liver didn’t like it.

Counting on a gun alone is foolish - are you prepared to reload spent casings, and for how long? It’s good to have one for the short-term, but for the long-term you’d better know how to handle something like a bow or a spear.

This movie only has 1.8 out of 5 stars on netflix, but I’ll give it a try anyway.

I am on Rawles every night and make a donation on behalf of his wife, who recently passed.

Great site.

BTW, your link was broken, that’s why I asked.

White willows are the ones commonly used to make medicine. However, all willows will contain salicin. Do some research and make sure the trees you have are safe to use. If there is a known allergy to aspirin, the same would apply to using salicin.

All tree bark contains tannins, which are good to use in a pinch. Even the US military manuals teach soldiers to use tree bark when injured.

Cattails are also a good source for medicinal and food uses, and are very common.

Don't listen to me though. Do your own research, and you will be amazed at all the things around you that are useful.

BTW, how many people realize the toilet doesn’t flush when the power goes off?

One of the many reasons a hand pump on a well is a VERY good idea. Or, put all your grey water in jugs for that use.
