Russian tanker freed from Somali pirates, crew unscathed, 1 pirate killed

Russian sailors from the large anti-submarine ship Marshal Shaposhnikov on Thursday freed a Russian tanker hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, a high-ranking official from the maritime coalition forces has reported. Some of the 10 detained pirates were injured. One pirate was killed during the assault operation held by Russian sailors. The Somali pirates involved in hijacking the Russian Moscow University tanker will be sent to Moscow for proceedings, a Russian Investigative Committee spokesman said on Thursday.

They used to have the death penalty for just about anything and I would suspect piracy is still on the list. The pirates must already be wishing they had picked any other ship, with any other flag, than this one and are hoping to get the noose. We all have our issues with the Russians, but they are among the very last people you ever want to f*** with.

Damn... talk about overkill. The Marshal Shaposhnikov is an Udaloy type destroyer. 8000 DWT 120000 HP CODAG propulsion 35 kts Carries the supersonic nuclear armed "Sunburn" anti ship missile, with a 120KT warhead.
