I'm not buying that one. The Spanish and Portuguese were every bit as efficient at killing off Indians, if not more so, than their French and British counterparts. Disease was the biggest killer in any event. Up to 70% of the native population in Hispaniola was wiped out within 30 years of Columbus’ arrival, and as many Incas suffered the same fate. Furthermore, many natives were forced into slavery where the Spanish and Portuguese were in control, in contrast to British and American rule. There was never any wide scale government program to kill Indians in the United States. If you look at Argentina today, there are more people there of European descent than Indian.

Finally, there is a much larger percentage of Americans with some Indian ancestry than most people realize.

None of this changes the fact that Amerindians and mestizos form a larger % of the population in Latin America than they do in the Anglosphere. The "black legend" is self-serving Anglo-saxon propaganda. What I'm trying to say here is that the myth that the Poms treated the Indians better than the Spaniards, Portuguese, and French is, indeed, a myth.

The Brits did not enslave the Indians due to the fact that the trading companies and economies of the northern half of North America did not lend itself to slave labor. By the time the plantation system was put into effect in the southern half of North America, the English already had well over a century of advance notice via South America that the Indians were too susceptible to disease in the lowlands/swamps, which is why they did as the Spanish and Portuguese did an imported Africans.

As far as Argentina is concerned, the main reason why the Indians were wiped out was indeed due to a coordinated campaign led by General Rosas AFTER independence.

As I digress, if there are in fact 30 Miliion illegal aliens as I believe is a fact, then there could be a lot more jobs for the 18 million out of work Americans who didin’t have to sneak under the barb wire on Mr. Krentz’z ranch.

I didn't object to the main point that a larger percentage of the population in Latin America has Indian blood than in the U.S. or Canada, just that somehow those of Northern European heritage killed natives more efficiently than the Iberians did. It's just not true.

The English, etc. may or may not have been more effective when they had to fight Indians, but for roughly the first fifty-five years in NE the relations were quite peaceful, particularly considering that the Indian tribes were warrior cultures that took warfare against other tribes to be a normal part of life.

In the colonies, it was seldom Europeans against Indians; it was Europeans and Indians against Indians or Europeans and Indians agains Europeans and Indians.
