“but you can imagine if you are a Hispanic American in Arizona, your great, great grandparents may have been there before Arizona was even a state.”
Yeah.. And then that little ‘incident’ called the Spanish-American War happened.
Who knew??? /sarc
He wants to go back to the pre-war borders.
Duh! all you need is a valid driver’s license.
Why all the fuss about “papers”?
I think you mean the Mexican War in 1848. The Mexico surrendered their claim to the lands north of the Rio Grande River, California, and the territory which is now Arizona and New Mexico. Of course, don’t ask Aztlan about that one. The Spanish-American War in 1898 was between Spain and the U.S., which is the time we acquired the Philippine Islands. End of the history lesson. Sorry I’m a history nut.
??? What does the Spanish American War have to do with the acquisition of of Arizona? Most of Arizona was acquirred under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo, which ended the Mexican-American war. That also got us parts of Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming, as well as the whole of California, Nevada and Utah. Mexico also aknowledged that the border of Texas was the Rio Grande, not the Nueces River as the Mexicans had claimed ever since the Texas War of Independence.
The parts of Arizona south of the Gila river were purchased in 1853, via the "Gadsen Purchase" as a deep southern route for the railroads.
The Mexican-American War was 1846 to 1848, the Spanish-American War was in 1898. That resulted in US ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines. We gave the latter independence after WW-II, as we had promised. But the former two are still US territory. We also controlled Cuba temporarily.
