One of the things that has intrigued me is the fact that God sent a rainbow as a sign after the flood. Apparently this was a unique event.
Perhaps there had never been rainbows before and therefore no rain or water vapor in the air until the flood. I wonder about that.

Well, the Bible does say that prior to the flood that the ground was watered by a sort of dew on the ground that formed, and that it hadn't rained. It was at the time of the world-wide flood that rain first started.
Apparently the atmosphere would have been much more dense (and that sort of thing could easily explain, too... how pterodactyls could even fly being that big, as they couldn't in today's atmosphere).
So, a much warmer climate, a very dense atmosphere, higher oxygen content, a sort-of "hyperbaric chamber effect" too, along with no rain or clouds, a high degree of shielding from cosmic rays and so on -- would make for a very lush and vibrant ecosystem and for long lives (as is apparent in the Bible).
