Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says seniors, kids and out-of-staters should be wary of the Arizona immigration bill signed into law this past week -- warning that it puts them at risk of being arrested.

The law makes illegal immigration a state crime. It gives police the authority to question people about their immigration status and arrest those who cannot show documentation to establish their legal residency.

He should be, after all Phoenix has been a sanctuary city for a long time. I know they CLAIM it’s not, but it is. They wouldn’t have to be housed too long, only long enough to be sent back to their homes in Mexico or where ever.

Not my theory. Personally, the place was in fine shape when Lancaster was the largest city on the East Coast.

Clearly that got out of hand.

I’m near Chicago where the presence of the ilk of MS-13 is no joke (your plain vanilla Mexican illegales go virtually unnoticed here because they stand out so little), but nobody ever wanted Americans to carry passports.

Good point. A quick check of Article I Section 8 only speaks of Naturalization. Immigration would then fall under the 10th Amendment. I do stand corrected.

Yes it does. But you are required to carry proof of insurance here in Arizona. It's against the law not to have it in your car when you are driving.

You are involved in a wreck you have to produce it....unless your are illegal, then you skate and the poor guy you hit gets stuck with the repair bill for his car that should have been paid for by the guy causing the wreck.

If it were this easy, Arizona, California, Nevada, Texas should be able to put up their own border fences.

Yes, indeed, the people of AZ have a slew of out-of-touch officials, but I fear the people themselves are also out-of-touch.

They ought to be able to grab the car of the at-fault driver itself as collateral in that case... whether driven by an American or a green martian. Of course they don’t.

See, "immigration" becomes a federal issue only to the extent the USSC (aka SCOTUS) decides there's an implied power at the federal level ~ e.g. protecting the nation's borders could be part of that (the very thing the federales don't want to do of course).

I can see the Solicitor General arguing to the court that even though the SCOTUS has earlier judged that border protection belonged to the federales, they really don't want to do what's necessary because of cost, too much traffic, indolence, etc.

That might well break even Sotomayor!

Arizona has not yet gone to the point of protecting its own borders, but as long as such protection didn't violate interstate commerce I suppose they could do it. In fact, "the people" could do so.

Again, we won’t have to carry passports. And if you have an MS-13 problem, then you need to call on law enforcement to solve it. I strongly suggest you call on your legislature to pass a mirror of Federal immigration law, as Arizona has done.

And your ‘plain vanilla Mexican illegal’? Yeah. He was MS-13 down here before he was MS-13 in Chicago. Or do you really think illegals are magically teleported to their destination a few miles after crossing the border?

Being able to do their own border fence would be wonderful. There’s no chance of a fence arresting somebody by mistake.

“People (adults, mostly, because children aren’t generally required to carry ID) who can’t produce identification of some sort in this country aren’t going to have an easy time of it if they do something to attract the professional attention of law enforcement, anyway.”

I’ve always thought it was illegal to be in public without ID as an adult.

I’ve never in my life been without it even when i’ve gone to the beach since i was 8, the last 65 years, and had a bank account and Social Security card and number.

Illegales are all around here, they buddy up with legal Hispanics. Most aren’t MS-13 or other gangs.

The illegals are still criminals. I don’t see your point. And the legal Hispanics who buddy up to illegals are aiding and abetting criminal activity, making them ‘not legal’.

Surprisingly they aren’t criminals, not in Illinois or any other non Arizona state. No legislature has declared their entry into America to be a crime. It is treated on par with a traffic ticket.

And you have hit the point of the matter. Everyone here legally, natural born or naturalized, tourist or worker, has legal identification. Only those who are here without legal sanction have to fear this law. Criminals, in other words.
