Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says seniors, kids and out-of-staters should be wary of the Arizona immigration bill signed into law this past week -- warning that it puts them at risk of being arrested.
The law makes illegal immigration a state crime. It gives police the authority to question people about their immigration status and arrest those who cannot show documentation to establish their legal residency.

Cloward-Piven means overwhelming the system. If this means the massive presence of illegales, both Rats and Pubs have given this massive noddage and winkage.
You jumped into the thread.
There should be no freedom to enter the country unlawfully.
Phil Gordon is a Dimocrat spouting idiocy.
With the valid entry stamps, and a visa if required, as some of our international agreements do not require it. Same as any other country on the planet.
Getting the illegales to self-deport by drastically curtailing their opportunities to get benefits or employment without first proving that they have legitimate business being in America, would probably help the most. Grabbing someone who might or might not be a legal resident is going, as you say, to bring big problems.
bwahahaha
Nobody you’re addressing is arguing that they ought to. This is a matter that is constitutionally assigned to the Feds. Congress could declare it a misdemeanor or worse if they wanted to.
See where I’m getting here? I mean just how long can one “visit” with a passport before one is deemed to be here illegally?
“The law has a codecil that allows the citizenry to sue an AZ LEA/county/city/town that refuses to enforce this. It is meant to be enforced. And enforced aggressively.”
Thanks. I don’t live in AZ so I only know what I’ve read.
I guess the next question will be whether or not it’s ruled unconstitutional when challenged in Federal Court.
Bye bye one more piece of American exceptionalism. I didn’t think the country aspired to be just one more name at the U.N.
And you continue to see boogiemen under the bed.
How do you propose to get rid of the New Conquistadores?
Or do you believe we should just let them run rampant once they get past the border?
Require proof of legitimate presence in America at the point of getting government benefits or employment. Result, self-deportation faster than you can say cha-cha-cha.
I think Phil Gordon is on the take for some pretty big money in order to go up against 70% of the Arizona population. Either that or he’s partners with the drug cartel.
We already “require proof” of legitimate presence for employment.
I don’t see a whole lot of self-deportation going on.
Like many laws over the centuries they have been enforceable by both the federal and state governments.
The Runaway Slave act springs to mind. There were federal penalties applicable to local sheriffs who used to assist in enforcement by slave catchers. More recently we've had states busting dope peddlers (under state law) and handing them over to the federales for concurrent prosecution under federal law.
It's really not a revolutionary idea that states can assist in dealing with federal problems.
In reality the Constitution doesn't even mention IMMIGRATION. You might check what the USSC has said in the past, specifically that the Congressional power to regulate naturalization, in Article 1, Section 8, includes the power to regulate immigration (see, for example, Hampton v. Mow Sun Wong, 426 U.S. 88 [1976]).
Big cities are more liberal than the countryside. Surprise!
So fine, the Feds can deputize whom they wish. Big hairy deal.
