‘South Park’ Creators Respond ("It wasn't some meta-joke ... Comedy Central added the bleeps.")

The “South Park” creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, have issued a statement in response to Comedy Central’s decision to alter an episode after a Muslim group’s warning:

In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn’t stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn’t some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle’s customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn’t mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too.

Can’t say Mohammad on a tv show, can’t show his image and yet, somehow it isn’t ridiculous to name almost every male muslim child “Mohammad”? Ho-kay.

“201,” this weeks episode, had Buddha snorting lines of coke and Jesus looking at internet porn. And Moses was a giant orange driedel.

That’s My Bush was also created by Parker and Stone. They were going to do a show about whichever candidate won the election. Had Gore won the show was going to be “Everybody Loves Al.” Also, it wasn’t an attack on Bush as much as sitcom conventions.

I think Moses is supposed to be the Master Control Program from TRON. The MCP was a rotating red cone with a face, just like Moses.

Moses has appeared this way in several episodes.

They should just reshow the one with Jesus and GW Bush defecating on the US Flag to make their point about WHAT will be censored and what won't be censored. That was the most awesome statement ever and we didn't even riot or kill anyone.

Yeah.... Believe it or not, Trey and Parker were trying to be a little subtle in showing that Comedy Central are such cowards they wouldn't show Mohammed, but Khomeni Central would show George Bush and Jesus defecating on the American flag.

I think some people watching that would get the message of Trey and Park on what Khomheni Central does regard censorship worthy and what they don't regard as needing banning. They can't all be brain dead morons that regard Stuart and Colbert as a legitimate source of news.

Mr. Shoop, really you are correct. But I guess my point was that either they are cowards or they will have a change of heart over mocking religious figures, they really can’t have it both ways.

Now I really don’t watch South Park that much. And I censored them myself with that awful Christmas poo episode, that is to say I turned the TV off.

But I really haven’t seen Jesus portrayed badly on that show, although He may have been.

And here is another annoying thing about the Mohammed sensitivity. Mohammed was a real, historical person.

In fact he has been portrayed many times in art. Sometimes negatively, sometimes positively.

This reminds me of the dreadful Christmas window display done at Barney’s in NYC some years ago. They showed Hello Kitty dressed up in S&M gear as the Virgin Mary. Of course the Catholic League had a cow over it, understandably.

But I remember thinking, the Virgin Mary can handle this cr*p, but why abuse poor little Hello Kitty in this way?

Here’s the distinction, of course, no death threats were issued by the Catholic League.

My TIVO didn’t record it because it was listed as a rerun in the schedule.

I have a STRONG suspicion Comedy Central sent out incorrect information to keep the show from being recorded automatically.

And, it isn’t on the South Park Studios site.

I really did think the censorship signs and bleeps were part of the joke , until I saw the episode was not being replayed as usual .
