The ash plume of southwestern Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano streams southwards over the Northern Atlantic Ocean in a picture taken by a British Geological Survey geologist flying from Reykjavik to Glasgow. The erupting volcano in Iceland sent new tremors on April 19, but the ash plume which has caused air traffic chaos across Europe has dropped to a height of about 2 km (1.2 miles), the Meteorological Office said.Photograph by: Handout, British Geological Survey
REYKJAVIK - Iceland's Eyjafjoell volcano has started spewing out less ash, a sign the eruption could be tapering off and that Europe's air traffic nightmare could be coming to an end, experts said Monday.
"Currently the eruption has diminished markedly," Bryndis Brandsdottir of the University of Iceland told AFP, basing her comment on seismological radar readings in Reykjavik.
"The ash column does not rise above 3,000 metres (9,800 feet)," or less than half its original height, she said, pointing out that "the amount of tethra (a type of ash that makes up the volcano plume) has diminished to the point that (experts monitoring the eruption) could not see the column."
Icelandic geophysicist and civil protection adviser Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson agreed that the ash column from the Eyjafjoell eruption which has paralyzed air travel in most of Europe was decreasing, six days after it began.
"Less ash has been generated over the last 36 hours than previously. The ash production has been reduced," he told AFP.

Bush's fault.
I bet this one volcano produces more greenhouse gasses in this single event than all humans do in a century.
I pray this is coming to an end, or at least becomes less of an impact. I am in the aircraft building business. Having our customers lose millions and millions with airplanes sitting on the ground, could make the post 9/11 economic slow down look like a slow news day.
Mr. Smith, the author of this article desperately needs to use his spellcheck. There is no such word as “tappering.”
“I bet this one volcano produces more greenhouse gasses in this single event than all humans do in a century.”
And as a result the Earth cools down a degree or two!
