I thought there was a traffic tunnel alongside the train tunnel.

Operation Dynamo was a Royal Navy and Marine Nationale operation, but the civilian “little ships” were an invaluable part of the operation.

No. Cars can be taken through the tunnel, but only on special rail shuttles - all of which are full to capacity.

Quite true 1raider1. It was, in fact, the Royal Navy’s destroyers that got the British Army (and a large chunk of the French army too) out of Dunkirk. Oh, the “little ships” were there alright, and they did their bit, but their actual involvement and effectiveness was considerably enhanced for propoganda purposes.

Thanks to you and all who informed me of the truth of the Dunkirk evacuation. The point I was trying to make was that I felt the article writer belittled the 1940 event by equating a bunch of inconvenienced tourists with the rescue of a military on the verge of annihilation.

I don’t know why I was thinking you could drive through it. We’ve seen a couple of specials on TV about it. I guess I was wrong!
