The Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Friday against John Jay College of Criminal Justice, alleging that the school engaged in a pattern of job discrimination against noncitizens who were authorized to work.
The lawsuit, considered the department’s first in years to crack down on immigration-related discrimination against noncitizens, says the college violated provisions of immigration law by demanding extra work authorization from at least 103 individuals since 2007, rather than accepting the work-eligibility documents required of citizens, like a Social Security card and a driver’s license.
The suit seeks civil penalties of $1,100 for each individual and unspecified measures to overcome the effects of discrimination. It also seeks compensation for each person affected, including the woman who set off the investigation when she complained in 2008 to the Justice Department’s Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices. She called the special counsel after she was fired from her job as a part-time computer lab assistant at the college, which is part of the City University of New York.
Christine Godek, a spokeswoman for the college, said John Jay had agreed “in principle” with the Justice Department to settle the case and fully compensate the woman who complained.
“We will be instituting a comprehensive training program to prevent any recurrence,” she said. “We reaffirm our commitment to providing employment opportunities to immigrants who are authorized to work in this country.”
While the Department of Homeland Security is responsible for policing employers who hire unauthorized workers, the Justice Department is committed to enforcing provisions of the 1996 Immigration and Nationality Act that prohibit employers from imposing different employment eligibility verification standards on noncitizens than on citizens, said Alejandro Miyar, a spokesman for the department.

Wait a minute. the immigration act, Simpson-Mazoli, requires all employers to do that, and penalizes those who don’t. So, they are being sued for complying with the law?

I have heard that old canard for years and it simply is not true. At best it is an oversimplification. Are you saying that if a person ever commits one sin he is guilty of them all forever? That would make the life of Jesus a rather empty gesture, wouldn't it?
What was the original sin of which we are all permanently stained? I consider it to be self-awareness, for eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge made Adam and Eve aware of self and of the good and evil which resides within them. Therefore, self-awareness or selfishness or self-centeredness or self-serving or what ever, are inescapable whether one is a Christian or not. Ayn Rand was simply advising that we use that part of ourselves rationally and called it enlightened self-interest.
Do you really believe an atheist cannot have good ideas? If an idea is a good one shouldn't we heed it? If a person has lived under Communism and takes the trouble to warn others of the dangers therein, even if she were a prostitute or Madame, shouldn't we heed them or at least see what they have to say? Was Einstein a Christian? (I really don't remember.)

Einstein was Jewish. He turned down several requests to become prime minister of Israel.
As to the rest of your argument, I disagree. Cheating on a spouse reveals something about the inner character of a person. Basically, it reveals that there's no such thing as a promise they won't break if it becomes convenient to do so. The vow of fidelity is also one of the easiest ones to keep. Nobody is going to hold a gun to your head and force you to cheat on your wife. You don't get into money trouble and have to cheat on your wife. You cheat on your wife because a couple of hours of self-gratification is more important to you than a vow made before God and to another person.
I don't know if you remember, but about twenty years ago a lady made a speech to the Republican National Convention. She had AIDS because her husband had contracted the virus during homosexual encounters and brought it home to her. Anytime a man cheats on his wife, he's risking giving her all the diseases he's exposing himself to. He doesn't do it for money or any other reason than his own self-gratification. You cannot trust such a man.

You guys have taken one statement of my post and stretched it beyond reason while ignoring the rest. I am not advocating infidelity. I simply said that A (cheating on wife) does not necessarily lead to B (cheating someone else). I know of a number of cases and a number of guys who have occasionally cheated on their wives but consider a handshake agreement as binding as one signed, notarized and filed at the courthouse. You can cite all the examples you want and I can match you tit for tat. A does not automatically equal B, period! I agree with all your arguments in favor of being faithful and I highly recommend it but infidelity does not invalidate ones life nor make one an untrustworthy devil.
nmh was blasting Ayn Rand and anyone who recommended her ideas, simply because she was an atheist. Do you agree with that, Richard? If you have one false belief does that invalidate all other ideas you might have?
My question about Einstein should have been whether or not he believed in God. Regardless, I am sure there are atheists who work in the areas of quantum physics, software development, medicine and many other fields. Is all their work invalidated by their atheism?
You guys need to find a street corner from which to evangelize. Logic is not your forte.
