It seems all too reasonable to me, for the very reason's you state - including having a clear eye as to the 'who' of Putin and what he is capable of' - that this man spoke the way he did.
Now, in retrospect; and with thoughtful regard to his future (missing, of course, in emotional aftermath. . .) can see his point per his now calm, 'reason brought to bear'.
