Worst-Made Cars on the Road

If you want to drive something dependable and long-lasting, steer clear of these vehicles.

With a 22% improvement in sales last month, and despite the six-month, $4.3 billion loss it announced Wednesday, General Motors is likely to have its strongest spring and summer in years. Plus, the automaker had critically acclaimed new products at the recent New York Auto Show and the much-anticipated Chevrolet Volt is due out this fall.

• Cars With the Best Gas Mileage

Year-over-year sales of GM's Cadillac division alone are up almost 76%; sales in the Buick, Chevrolet and GMC divisions were each up more than 40% for March. The industry as a whole was up 24.3%.

Unfortunately just because GM's cars are selling well now doesn't mean they're the best bet for durability or value -- yet. It'll take awhile before GM's new direction shows up in tangible new products at the dealership.

Four of the seven vehicles on our list of the worst-made cars on the road come from GM brands.

So you're telling me that the real cost is about $40K each but is only being held down due to the subsidy?

Are these things even built to last more than 150K miles so there is some chance of payback if gas goes over $5 per gallon?

You are right about little logic or reason on what car people decide to drive and little truth about gas mileage. That huge ‘67 Chevy Caprice was a dream to drive. It had a 327, turbo-hydramatic, 4 dr hardtop, gold body and black vinyl top. I put 234,000 miles on it before gasoline got hard to find and expensive. Bought a used 72 Honda, 2 dr sport model with 2 cyl air-cooled engine that got 40 mpg. I’m keeping my Geo Metros that get 50 mpg and one that gets 60 mpg for when gas hits $7 gal, but not comfortable to drive. I drive my 2000 Toyota Echo 4 dr for a little comfort, but I’m still tired when I get somewhere. It is small, but I got a good deal on it, gets 38 mpg unless using a/c, and now has 117,000 miles and no trouble. I don’t ever plan on buying a gov’t car. My brother had a Yugo when commuting, but he didn’t think it was funny when I told him he could double its value just by filling it with gas.

"I retired my ‘94 Sururban with 262,000 miles on it. "

Love my 99. It's got 102,000. And I'm a guy who would only buy exotics most of his life. I bought this to tow my boat. Now I've sold all the toys, but I still love this truck.

In your opinion. My 2008 Gold Wing is heavier, faster and safer than that...that...whatever it is.

I definitely agree with that.

A motorcycle is simply not safe.

It's hard to argue with someone who simply states an opinion without a reasoned argument or facts.

You mean like when people impugn Consumer Reports without telling us why?

The problem is, Aevery, and certainly this is just my opinion, is that on a motorcycle, you are so much more subject to the mistakes made by every other moron and idiot on the road due to the lack of substantial steel around your body.

Just last week a man on his bike was killed as he rode in the right lane of a highway, because a woman decided to make a right turn from the left lane of that highway, and she just drove right in front of him, causing him to fly over the car and into the pavement.

Last new GM I bought was a ‘76 Chevy Vega. OK, stop laughing. Who knew that building a lightweight engine with an aluminum block engine might have bore scuff issues? Had 4 Mazda's including 2 rotary engine RX-7’s. The rotary was supposed to have problems too, but maybe I just didn't hang on to them long enough to see them. Tough shifting the rotaries because you could never hear the engine rev - they were so cool.

Drove a 1971 Chevy C15(00) SWB, 250 Straight Six, Standard Trans on the column for 350,000 miles. Guy I sold it to still drives it.

Drove 1993 K1500 for 230,000 miles. Never used oil, other than the initial half quart. Only problem was in the transmission, at about 120,000 miles which was a silent recall and was fixed gratis. Sold due to a collision (12 yr old driving his sister's car) that was never fixed right.

Currently driving a 2002 K1500 at 180,000 miles. This one is an automatic and the trans needs a rebuild finally.

I have friends who swear by fords and have driven them just as long. Both companies make good trucks.

My next truck will probably be a ford if Chevrolet is still government owned at that time.

Ok, you drive one.

I did. Not a problem. One thing is that even thought it doesn't look like it, you sit pretty high up.

Cadillac CTS = Absolute POS.

Dumped mine in December for a Japanese make. I’ll never own another GM product. Never.

It's hard to argue with someone who simply states an opinion without a reasoned argument or facts. It's your opinion, and you are entitled to hold it.

Have to come to mono's defense on this one. Do you normally choose your vehicles or make other financial decisions...and expensive ones at that, given what new vehicles cost today...solely based on emotion? Because that is exactly what you are asking us to do if you say we should boycott them simply due to the bailout. Where is the reasoned argument in that? I am sure mono, like me, can cite quality issues that would qualify as a much more reasoned argument than yours, heck, mine would even qualify as facts given the mileage on my GM vehicles I have owned without mechanical issues. I don't spend that much money based on emotion and it would be foolish to do so.

Really? Would you say that you sat as high as in one of these? What do you think would happen to you if you got broadsided by this F-350 whilst driving that well built, high-seated smart car? Do you think that its bumper would meet the frame of the smart car and the impact absorbed all nice and neatly? Or would it meet your rib cage and internal organs?

H3 on a Suburban frame? I don’t see how thats remotely possible

The H3 shares a chassis with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The H2 is built on a tweaked chassis from the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. It is in the same series as the Surburban chassis. The H1 is a completely different vehicle and drivetrain from anything else on the road.
