You're correct. Zionism was a reaction to hatred. The early Zionists were secular, that Europeans (who they dealt with at the time) hated Jews wouldn't surprise them, that's what they were fleeing. That some Arabs in Israel, in those days Palestine, the Jewish homeland, hated them, no surprise.
