Are you being facetious? They either had to be a citizen at the time of the adoption of the constitution or a natural born citizen if not alive then.

Here is what it says (assuming you quoted it correctly): “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President;”

Those pesky commas, just like in the Second Amendment, leave much doubt as to the intended meaning. Why is there a comma in between “States” and “at”?
