FYI: The reason I liked this piece is because Brooks succinctly summarizes what I dislike about the current libertarian-oriented Tea Party movement: “. . . the SECULAR anti-government elements (e.g., the paleocons, Paulites, and neo-libertarians) have the upper hand and the social conservatives are dormant. [DrDeb: If the truth be known, Libertarians despise social conservatives — always have and always will! They also despise both the War on Terror and the President who chose to fight this war!]

It got me thinking of what a really outstanding person H.W. is, whatever one thinks of his politics and so on.

I reviewed his wartime letters to Barbara for The Times years ago and one of my journalistic regrets is that I didn’t give it a more glowing review. In retrospect, it was a collection of letters by a fundamentally decent person who sought to do the right thing without guile or cynicism. People who worked in his administration admired the guy through all four years, which doesn’t happen with everybody.

I love this statement about GHWB. I think it is an accurate reflection of what we know of him. (My goodness, DrDeb, you sure were right about the horrid comments on that site! Whew! I thought Collins' comments were crazy and then I found that most everyone agreed with her!)

Thank you for the other articles as well. BTW, just voted "thrilled" and was thrilled to do so!
