I was quoting ‘Positive’ who is in Temecula.

And, yes, we had significant sloshing of water out of the pool in West L.A./Culver City... not an exaggeration... due to the prolonged rolling motion.

Because of the strength of the quake, which was a sharp shock near the epicenter, the outlying areas feel it as a rolling motion. This was explained on KNX News Radio.

The depth given is for the hypocenter (the actual location underground where the rupture of the quake STARTS); the epicenter is the location on the surface directly above the hypocenter.

However the actual earthquake itself occurs along a long section of fault, with the rupture propogating one way or the other (or, in some cases, as this appears to be, in both directions) including propagating “upward.”

Pretty much all strike-slip quakes are relatively shallow, and almost all this size (with the notable exception of Loma Prieta) create “surface rupture” - the fault breaks all the way to the surface.

Thus you should be able to go out to the Mexican desert tomorrow and see the actual break in the surface with the west side moving north; also some up and down motion with one side of the fault higher than the other.

Oops!! My mistake. I know I heard CNN say originally 21 MILES and then the USGS changed it to 6.2 MILES......

feet, now that would be bad....

The USGS Population exposure map has 129,000 people in Mexico exposed to Mercalli Intensity VIII shaking, with moderate/heavy damage to earthquake-resistant structures, and heavy damage to vulnerable structures.

Umm...yes you would. Easily.

Straight up and down? No way - period. I'll be graceful, though, and guess that maybe the original poster meant pool overflow that rolled two or three feet onto the lawn.

I saw video from Temecula, and the pool was just gently releasing water onto the deck....

We lived very near epicenter of the Northridge quake, and the neighbors on both sides had pools.

21 feet, there would be a big gaping hole in the Mexicali area.

lol. I dunno.

I found it odd that they upgraded it from a 6.9 to a 7.2. It’s almost always the other way around. 6 miles is shallow for a 7.2 and I doubt you would be able to stand up anywhere near it ...

This is at least six inches of slosh, 160 miles from the epicenter.
