The Good News : 1) We met with the Sec of State Thursday & had a press conference in his office to announce that the Personhood Amendment had sufficient signatures to be on the ballot in 2011. Mississippians will get an opportunity to vote on this, and should pass it if we are not overcome by misinformation from pro-abortion forces and defenders of the status quo.
2) Afterward, we had a meeting with our Lt Gov, Phil Bryant, and some of his staff/ political folks. As you know, Lt Gov Bryant has been very actively supportive of Personhood. They committed to helping with the campaign next year!
3) Thursday night one of the Jackson Miss TV stations did a story about the Personhood Amendment and then put up an online poll asking "
Personhood MS wants to amend the state constitution to say life begins at fertilization. Do you think life begins at conception?"
80% of respondents said "Yes". This is, obviously, not a scientific poll, but we did not know about this until after the fact, so it was not skewed by a bunch of emails going out asking people to vote in the poll.
(The poll is linked in the letter below)
The Bad News 1) A representative for NOW has already announced that they were "gathering opposition" to defeat the Personhood Amendment.
2) The ACLU is already working on a legal challenge
3) Other folks nationally with deep pockets and big audiences are already working to undermine us publicly as quickly as possible
NEEDS: 1)
The campaign will be launched soon. You will have the opportunity to get involved. We need to grow our grassroots coalition. The help of everyone who worked on the petition drive and then some will be needed to translate this victory in the petition drive into victory at the ballot box and culture.
Phase one of the campaign will be organizing at the county, town, and church level
Phase two will be a massive grassroots ministry and educational campaign in which every Mississippian will be reached with the facts about the humanity of the unborn and the love of Christ.
Through this MANY ministry opportunities will arise. By the time the election comes, we want to have created an environment where every child and every mother in Mississippi and beyond knows that hope & help-- physical & Spiritual -- is available.
Phase three will be a statewide political campaign to ensure victory at the ballot box
Pray for the effort and pray about how you might get involved

Now the Campaign STARTS!
My friends, the faithful in Mississippi need our help this weekend to jump start the effort!
The vision of Les Riley and a handful of families in Mississippi burdened about the injustice of abortion on demand has inspired over 130,000 voters to sign a petition to recognize children as innocent persons, and to protect them by love and by law.
Yesterday the Secretary of State announced that the Personhood Amendment to the Mississippi State Constitution will be on the ballot in 2011! Up to that point the abortion lobby ignored the effort, but on that day pro-abortion forces announced a coalition to stop its passage. Why would they spend the time and effort in one of the most pro-life states in the country? A win in Mississippi can start the unraveling of the legal framework that has resulted in the death of millions of children in the womb, infants, and the infirm here in America.
Please take a look at this great article from the AP.
http://www.sunherald.com/2010/04/01/2069376/abortion-opponents-in-miss-clear.html
The effort to get the Mississippi Personhood Amendment on the ballot was a truly grassroots pro-life effort with well over 1000 churches and 2000 volunteers collecting signatures. Their sacrifices of time, hard work, and sacrificial giving during an economic downturn have won the first battle to defend the sanctity of life in Mississippi. Stories abound of lives changed as faithful Christians took advantage of opportunities to share the Gospel and bring help to hurting individuals and families during petitioning.
But bigger challenges loom on the horizon and we need your help now to win the war!
We now need to stand with Les and the 2,000 volunteers in Mississippi and get their campaign started!
Also would you send a note of encouragement to Les Riley who helped lead the effort, he can be reached at personhoodmississippi@gmail.com
Thank you very much.

PS there is an online poll right now in MS that shows about 80% of Mississippi will approve the Personhood Amendment today. Check it out here: http://www.wlbt.com/Global/category.asp?C=7855 (it is half way down the page)

These personhood amendments are dumb... from conception to birth they are “already but not yet” persons... there needs to be a way to get that paradox recognized...

... from conception to birth they are already but not yet persons... You must have the same redacted copy of the Constitution as Barack Obama. What utter nonsense.

Sorry, but the pro-life movement is very politically tone deaf... the defeat in South Dakota was a disgrace... pro-lifers would have won if it would have had exceptions for health, rape, incest exceptions... the personhood amendment in at least in Colorado will fail... and it will be a huge setback...

I’m sorry you believe that others don’t have the same rights as yourself. I’m sorry that you don’t believe in God-given unalienable rights for all persons as the founders of this free republic did. I’m sorry that you’re so ignorant of the Declaration of Independence, which is this nation’s charter. I’m sorry that you ignore the stated ultimate purpose of the US Constitution, which is to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to posterity.” I’m sorry that that there isn’t one iota of difference between you and Judge Blackmun, who has the blood of more than fifty million innocents on his hands.

By the way, it’s hard for me to imagine something more despicable than twisting the Bible out of context to justify the torture murder of tens of millions of innocent little children, as you are doing.

All I have to go by is your posts on this thread. And you’ve done exactly what Blackmun did, which is to dehumanize the child. Once you’ve done that, America’s core principles are dead and liberty is on its way out.

Perhaps. But even trolls have their uses. This one is a poster child for the illogical and immoral nonsense we’re up against.

Using the Bible to justify abortion is a new low, even for the pro-death crowd.
It is disgusting that you and your ilk would advise the pro-life movement to abandon life because of political expediency. You would have felt very much at home among the Whigs in the early 19th century.
The whole "rape, incest, health of the mother" argument is the pro-death movement's biggest red herring, it will not result in eliminating a single abortion and everyone knows it.
Why don't you just say what you really think? Why don't you just come right out and say that abortion doesn't bother you at all and you wish conservatives would just drop the subject?

GREAT NEWS!
We need a few states to approve personhood to set the stage for Congress to use Section 5 of the 14th Amendment for the ultimate personhood law: clarifying that the word “person” in Section 1 of the 14th Amendment means all human beings from conception to natural death.
