Rise of Hungary's far-Right Jobbik party stirs disturbing echoes of the 1940s
As Hungary prepares to vote in a crucial election, the far-Right Jobbik party expects great success - to the consternation of democrats and those old enough to remember the fascist past.

As the youthful leader of Hungary's far-right Jobbik party arrived for an election rally, his followers gave him a welcome that had disturbing echoes of Europe in the 1940s.
Two ranks of Hungarian Guards, in paramilitary-style uniforms, snapped to attention as Gabor Vona marched past them. Party leaders saluted, and a red and white banner was raised - one that looked suspiciously similar to Hungary's old fascist emblem.
The rally in a school hall in the normally sleepy town of Dunakeszi was packed with hundreds of supporters. They cheered as Mr Vona promised to rid Hungary of corruption and crack down on foreign interests.
He spoke about stopping Roma, the country's biggest ethnic minority, from sponging off the state - forcing anyone claiming benefits to perform public service in return. He promised to "give back Hungary's national pride and identity".
The enthusiasm showed that Mr Vona has come a long way since Jobbik launched seven years ago. Its fierce nationalistic agenda and far-right rhetoric were soundly rejected by the electorate then. In national elections in 2006 it polled a miserable 2.2 per cent, failing to get a single member of parliament elected.
But now as Hungary prepares for crucial new elections the tide has turned, and it is flowing strongly Jobbik's way. To the horror of democrats who thought Hungary had shaken itself free of political extremism in 1989 with the fall of communism, Jobbik is on course to become the second biggest party in parliament.

Perhaps the Hugarians are having the same reaction to the EU that our states are just beginning to have to the federal government.
Is this guy being smeared as “far right” just like Wilders in the low countries, for not wanting Islamisation.
I smell a rat.
An article long on accusations and short on facts.
I have no more idea what their actual positions are after reading that article than I did before. But, given the lack of substance, I assume that they are “far right” only in he minds of the leftists at the Telegraph.
Too many here try to look at european left and right through an American lens and I think that gives a pretty distorted view.
Fascists are not far right.
When is the last time there was a story about a “far left” head of state? Hugo certainly would qualify as would Castro and our own president too for that matter.

Looks that way. If you do a little research, the party appears more populist-right than authoritarian. The current regime (leftist and corrupt) appears to be pulling out the old propaganda line of “they’re right wing and popular thus they must be nazi” Naturally, the press is all too willing to help.

Agreed, just looking at some of their own info on the web makes me a little nervous about them. The fact that the little ladies over at the stormfront forum love them is another good reason to look a bit more closely.
The fact of the matter is Europe needs parties like this to influence their national policies after so many years unchecked of green, communist, and labor party shenanigans. To put it another way, would our parents or grandparents have considered it “far-right” or “extremist” to crack down on crime, or demand that people do a little work for their welfare check?
