Media SMS alert list, actually, was how it got out. The USGS has a Twitter account that is triggered by SMS as well, and it broadcast the 8.0 alert as well. Additionally, other disaster sites picked up and spread the alert, plus one of the disaster clearing houses went so far as to not only repeat the information, but put forth detailed tsunami predictions, and THAT went out again, just got another alert.

Really, really starting to snowball right now.

Quite the earthquake swarm has been occurring the last two days further east near the Virgin Islands, that is why this would not surprise me. Thank God, it was an error!

Unreal...mass manipulation is so easy these days.

Sobering thought.

I went to the usgs site to double check- and found some 3. magnitudes..but nothing that would startle a native used to the ground rumbling.

“Isn’t the speed of data amazing....particularly when it’s wrong.”

Mark Twain would have loved ssing this...he used to say that “a lie can travel around the world before the truth can get its boots on.” or words to that effect.

This report was automatically updated by a computer on: 4/3/2010 1:42:57 AM UTC (20 hours 4 minutes after the event) Downloads: Word report, PDF report Explanation of alert calculation: Show The impact model combines magnitude (M), population within 100km (P) and vulnerability/resilience ECHO average score (V) using the formula: alertscore = max(M-4.5,0) * log10(max(P / 80000,0))^ 0.5 * max(V,0.5) ^ 1.5 / 3 The weighted product of magnitude (8), population (201116) and vulnerability (0.88) results in an alertscore of 0.970380753761687 Medium tsunami impact: wave height at coast expected to exceed 1.5m. The alertscore is set to 2. Then alert is Red if alertscore>2, Orange if alertscore>1 and Green if alertscore<=1. Tsunami wave height

Reported as an 8 when it should have been a 3? Probably reported by one of those displaced global warming scientists.

Yeah, but they look alike. Somebody scribbles a bad "3" it might look like an "8". Or maybe you spill coffee on that "3" report, or whatever, and it starts getting "8"ish.

Amazingly detailed eventing information for an earthquake that never happened. Only problem is that NGOs as well as some military follow their alerts, and it wouldn't surprise me if there's a heck of a lot of people running around the Pentagon right now, panicking over any personnel in the region.
