The father of a Marine killed in Iraq whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters told Fox News he will defy a court order and not pay the protesters' appeal costs.
Albert Snyder, of York, Pa., told Fox News he does not intend to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps, the leader of Kansas' Westboro Baptist Church, which held protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.
"I don't think I'm going to be writing a check until I hear from the Supreme Court," Snyder told Fox News on Tuesday. "I'm not about to pay them anything."
The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder on Friday to pay Phelps. A two-page decision supplied by his attorneys offered no details on how the court came to its decision.
The decision adds "insult to injury," said Sean Summers, one of Snyder's attorneys.

Bill O’Reilly will be paying these costs for Mr. Snyder.
Is that correct? Because, otherwise, we really do need to take up a collection and make sure this Marine family don’t ever have to pay a cent.
He announced it on his show; he’s paying the court costs. Very generous of him.
But rather than see that happen I would be willing to donate to his cause. This poor man and his family have suffered enough.
Burned......
And they even manage to get FReepers to fall for it, hook, line, and sinker and end up defending them.
I think there is a special place in Hell for Phelps and his crew. Hitler and Stalin will comfort each other in their eternal torment by saying, It could be worse, we could be in the Phelps wing.
LOL!!!
Just watched that. I wasn’t clear that BO’R is paying it all, but he did give out this website: http://www.matthewsnyder.org/
Nobody here was defending the phelpians - they were defending the First Amendment.
Oh shucky darns. You got my hopes up. I went looking for the ashes.
Than again, they send kids to these funerals as insurance against any violence towards them. They are the lowest of the low.
In the beginning of the show, he said he was going to pay so the father wouldn’t have to worry about it.
You don’t have teenagers, do you?
I didn’t know there was a First Amendment right to stalk and harass for the purpose of causing extreme emotional pain. Is there a Second Amendment right to shoot people for entertainment?
Sure, I know what it means, but with my wishful thinking, my first thought was more along the lines of a good zot.
Phelps should consider the fate of this other pretender to the pulpit. Sometimes God's wrath comes sooner than you think.
If anyone catches wind of a spendthrift trust set up for the benefit of this brave man’s family, please ping me.
OK, fine, Bayb - let’s let ol Eric Holder tell us what we can and can’t say. No - wait - that’s what the 1st Amendment is supposed to protect us against.
And, no, there is no fundamental right to not be bothered by the speech of creeps. Sorry.
Stalking is a different story and the first amendment doesn’t cover it. But, that’s not the issue here.
And, I’m not sure what you meant by your last sentence, other than illustrating a non sequitur.
As a Marine mom, I have attended funerals and stood between the funeral party and protesters. I do what I can to help ease the family’s pain.
Thanks for the info.
The First Amendment is about freedom of speech, not the right to violate other people’s rights as long as you involve speech in the process.
The Second Amendment is about the right to keep and bear arms, not the right to violate other people’s rights as long as you involve guns in the process.
You’re trying to extend the First Amendment beyond what it actually is, to create a right that doesn’t exist.
