Officials worry anger at D.C. is behind low Texas census response
Houston Chronicle ^ | 3-27-2010 | RICHARD S. DUNHAM - MEREDITH SIMONS

WASHINGTON — Texas is counting on the 2010 Census to deliver four new congressional districts, four new Electoral College votes in presidential elections, and millions of dollars in additional federal aid. But, as some elected officials are starting to worry, Uncle Sam can't deliver anything to the rapidly growing Sun Belt state unless Texas residents deliver their forms back to the government.

As of Friday afternoon, only 27 percent of Texas households had filled in and returned their census forms — well below the national average of 34 percent — according to computer data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In Harris County, the response rate is 23 percent. Houston's returns are running at 21 percent. ........

Polling by the Pew Research Center finds Democrats are more likely than other Americans to view the census as “very important” to the country. Seventy-six percent of Democrats call this year's count very important, compared with 61 percent of Republicans and independents.

In Texas, some of the counties with the lowest census return rates are among the state's most Republican, including Briscoe County in the Panhandle, 8 percent; King County, near Lubbock, 5 percent; Culberson County, near El Paso, 11 percent; and Newton County, in deep East Texas, 18 percent. Most other counties near the bottom of the list are heavily Hispanic counties along the Texas-Mexico border. .....

“People are concerned about the apparent intrusive nature of the census,” said Rep. Ted Poe, R-Humble. “People are very concerned that the government is going too far.” ........

But Texas can only get those seats, and the congressional clout that comes with it, if Texans stand up to be counted. Any conservative revolt would only reduce the representation in conservative areas of the state, .........

end snips

Just say how many in the household. Leave the rest blank. It’s against my religion to say anything about race... we’re all human, except for pelosi, perhaps. I hope the first drops of water are falling on THAT witch.

I wonder how many census responses from Red states are being “lost” in the Census Bureau bureaucracy?

Click on "View Participation Rates" at the following map

Census Map showing participation rates

The above map showing participation rates can be viewed from different regions such as state, county, local zones, etc.

It is interesting to note that the counties bordering the Mexican border along the Rio Grande in Texas have very low participation rates.

I've got to wait until April 1st to know how many people are living here on that day.

BTW, what if someone lies and claims more poeple than are really there?

My census form has been sitting on my kitchen counter for two weeks.

I am soooo ticked off at DC, I'm not sure if it will be filled out.

That's what I did. They even had the nerve to ask people for their phone numbers! Mine is unlisted and shall remain so.

According to the census form I received, they want to know the amount of people in the household on 04-01-2010. Unless I’m clairvoyant, I don’t know how many people will be living their on that date.

The time for elections is over. Congressional districts mean nothing in a Socialist Dictatorship. F-em, we’re gonna have to tear this thing down and start over anyway.

The Census will just send Chicago THUGS to your house if you don’t send back the form.

Put in “AMERICAN NATIVE” for your Race, if you have at least 4 Generations born in the USofA. Otherwise, list “OTHER” [Human] which MAY win you a visit, for all I know. After all, WHITE is NOT a Race, it’s a color and it is RACIST to list a color for Race/Ethnicity.

BTW: More American Natives, More Federal Money.

I’m thinking about running it through a cross-cut shredder before mailing.

Exactly! It’s not April 1st yet - so how can they expect the sheeple to fill out the answer if they don’t really know! I thought that was the dumbest question on the form. I sent mine in reluctantly - and put an old disconnected phone number as my number. Last thing I want is crap calls from the Census weasles.

Race=Pasty White
Sex=yes please

Proof that most people in Texas understand that when the form asks for data as of April 1 they have to wait until April 1 to return the form.

The Census — brought to you by the people who now run your health care!
