Duke is an extraordinary anomaly. DUKE WAS ORIGINALLY A DEMOCRAT, but took advantage of the relatively disorganized Republicans in 1980's Louisiana to secure a place on the ballot. He had zero support from Republicans on a statewide or national level. When he ran for governor, a popular bumpersticker on Republican cars was "Vote for the Crook, It's Important"; the crook, of course, being Democrat Edwin Edwards.
Of course the links between the KKK and the Democrat Party are now almost ancient history. Only one former Klansman remains in the US Congress. and he has apologized for his involvement. Unlike most Democrat apologies, I think Sen. Byrd's apology for his involvement in that wretched organization is sincere.
