You can’t complain that a comment makes the thread a bash, without also accepting the notion that a pedophile priest makes your church a brood of vipers — it’s the very same principle, that the element defines the whole.
This is not a good analogy.
One priest absolutely does make all priests pedophiles, nor does it make the Catholic Church (and its priests) a brood of vipers.
Such a broad brush of Catholics as a whole and all priests as pedophiles in particular is a much greater injustice than a single thread on a busy forum.
I am reasonbly sure that you have read other posts on other threads here that have given the statistical number that over 94% of Catholic priests have not committed the crime of pedophilia. In any other kind of poll, 94% is a very high number.
When all priests are targets, what is happening is that they are being tagged, as if they were being required to wear a yellow band on their sleeve. This is an injustice to good priests and should not be something that goes uncontested.
Regarding post #2—when a poster refers to the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon, it is certainly nothing new. It harkens back to the Know Nothings. And it’s still a reprehensible pejorative.
