Great letter, Sharie. My very special son should be entering first grade in the fall. Unfortunately, there is no government option in the government school system for his education. I am looking at a school right now, but the tuition is $17K. Since the county school system refuses to provide the education my son needs, I am going to suggest to them that perhaps I can keep my property tax money to help defray the costs of private education. Think they'll go for that?

My current insurance covers an hour a week of both speech and occupational therapy. I don't like the idea of a government mandating to insurance companies what they can and can't cover. It all comes down to this: Do you trust your government? That's a selling point that even liberals should understand.

Let me know how that property tax thing works out for ya ok? We have been blessed with a private Catholic school that has embraced the mission to educate all children.

I would be given so much power if I could shop for health insurance. What cards I could hold with a “Either adapt and provide what my children need or I will look for another plan...” For parents with autistic kids the difference speech and OT make when they are in preschool can truly determine the outcome. If I could have found a plan that was geared for those services we would have been better off. OR a plan that had a deal worked out with our local children's hospital autism clinic allowing us to add this as a special option to add to a basic plan we could personalize the plan to our families unique needs. With this option the 8K we currently spend every year just for insurance could really help my children.

Sharie

P.S. Hoodat, may you find incredible treasure in raising a special child. The lessons in unconditional love and acceptance have made me a richer and more grateful person.
