"As for legalizing drugs, prostitution, and homosexuality...it's none of my business how people conduct their lives as long as they don't harm others. "

Therein lies the rub...no pun intended.

For each of those things you mentioned to exist, there must be a constant stream of new "recruits", as those who make money off these vices are not going to just let them fade away.

Children and young people are lured into the world of drugs everyday, totally ruining their lives...very few ever recover and lead normal lives. As this permeates deeper adn deeper into our society, we get more and more people who are into crime to support their habits, and who offer nothing to society as a whole...usually ending up either dead, in jail, or living on the government dole.

Prostitution is a "victimless" crime, they say...but look around at how many lives have been ruined by prostitutes and venereal diseases.

Homosexuality is permeating every facet of life now, it's being promoted to children in the schools, youth organizations, and the public in generals. Just voicing your opinion about homosexuality has become a hate crime, and aids in rampant.

As for the "etc", there are many things that people do, like a mom and four children being killed by a drunk driver...it's none of your business if he wants to drink and drive...until it's your wife and four children in the car.

It's easy to perch on a pedestal and let society shrivel up to a decadent rabble of druggies and other immoral practices, but it's your kids who have to grow up in such a world and pay to support the leftovers of such lifestyles.

Even if you have no kids or family, the current generation is slamming prior generations for leaving them with a "bad environment", "massive debt", "no future"...but today's libertarians are leaving future generations with an even worse fate, a third world hellhole of lawlessness, decadence, and filth.

The libertarian "I don't care as long as it doesn't harm me" attitude is one of a selfish child, saying f*** the rest of the world, just leave me alone.

In that sense, libertarians are far, far to the left of liberals and progressives, and should be totally comfortable in obamaland.

The practices you want to ignore and shun are the very ones which will eventually wreck society and put you living in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere. What affects one, eventually gets around to the rest of us.

This is not a war against to who use drugs or practice prostitution/homosexuality, but it is against those who profit off of the recruitment and indocrinating our young...it gets worse every year, with the end game being everyone in the country being stoned and buying from these vultures.

Ignoring crime and perversion, is condoning crime and perversion.

Just as you say, there are negative consequence to legalizing prostitution, drugs, etc. The same could certainly be said of alcohol. Would you bring back prohibition?

Absolutely brilliant post, and one with which I agree completely. The Founding Fathers were not a bunch of drugged-out hippie hedonists. They were very clear that liberty in America would not survive if the people were not moral and did not exercise self-control.

I don't know, but I suspect that prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas because it would hurt the profits of the other vice (gambling). Most people do not like whores trolling for business in their presence, and no good neighborhood where middle-class law-abiding people live will have open solicitation going on. Drugs, gambling, and prostitution are all dangerous to stable family life, which is the basis for all civilization, including free civilization.

Libertarians are no more supportive of the Obama nanny state than they are of the Giuliani nanny state.

The same faux reasoning that you use to justify prohibition against vices that you do not like have been applied to beer, demon rum, Coca Cola, Big Macs, comic books, and religion. I suppose your slogan should be, “it’s not fascism when we do it.” Government is not going to create heaven on earth. But it is pretty adept at creating infernos, and that’s where your reasoning inevitably leads. Obama and Pelosi rationalize their positions in exactly the same way as you.
