Roll call votes are political show. I prefer the electronic voting, although I would not give them as long as they do. I might even require "synchronized" voting. Something like: "Input your vote and on my mark lock it in (turn keys)..."3,2,1 Mark" and require the keys be turned within very seconds. Why all the drama, it's not like they have think about it at that point.
The Nebraska Unicameral has used a similar system as long as I can remember (I'm 60 so that would go back to the early 60s, before then I wasn't much aware of the Leg was doing) At first the action merely lit up a light next to the Senator's name, yea or nay. It may have produced an overall total, but the clerk still had to record the votes manually. Now I'm pretty sure they record the votes automatically as well.
Roll call makes it easier to dodge I suppose.
