Israel's ambassador to the US has said that relations between the two countries are at their lowest point for 35 years, Israeli media have reported.
Last week Israeli officials announced the building of 1,600 new homes in occupied East Jerusalem while US Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting.
The move was seen as an insult to the US. Palestinian leaders say indirect talks with Israel are now "doubtful".
But Israel's PM said Jewish settlements did "not hurt" Arabs in East Jerusalem.
Addressing Israel's parliament, the Knesset, Benjamin Netanyahu said he wanted peace negotiations, and hoped the Palestinians would not present "new preconditions" for talks.
"No government in the past 40 years has limited construction in neighbourhoods of Jerusalem," he said.
"Building these Jewish neighbourhoods in Jerusalem does not hurt the Arabs of East Jerusalem or come at their expense."

Obama promised “change”. Prepare to reap the whirlwind.
To all farm animals RUN.
The Islamofascist are partying.
Should please the whole Democratic Party. Jonah Goldberg really hit gold with his book Liberal Fascism.
I wonder if the President has his 400,000 youths, marching about in the countryside.
Obama’s Plan!
Carter’s administration.
And that’s exactly how Obumblingidiot wants it.
More or less inevitable under a Muslim president.
I thought Zero was going to restore America’s name in the world and work in tandem with foreign countries. Well, I guess he did. Now we are working against Israel in tandem with everyone else.
I’ve gotta talk to an Israeli and ask what it feels like to have a total IDIOT deciding our relationships to them.
What an embarassment this president is! Pray for peace in Israel.
For gosh sakes, what was half America thinking when they elected a Muslim boob to the White House. What the hell know of change were they hoping for?
“Ties between Israel and US ‘worst in 35 years’”
We’ve elected a man by the name of BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.
Go figger.
Obama’s campaign to undermine Israel may be backfiring:
FROM GALLUP, 2-24-10
SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL IN U.S. AT 63 PERCENT
by Lydia Saad
PRINCETON, NJ For the first time since 1991, more than 6 in 10 Americans 63% say their sympathies in the Middle East situation lie more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians. Fifteen percent side more with the Palestinians, down slightly from recent years, while a combined 23% favor both sides, favor neither side, or have no opinion.
The 63% sympathizing with Israel today is statistically unchanged from the 58% to 59% seen from 2006 to 2009; however, it is considerably higher than most of the previous readings on this Gallup measure since 1993. The trend includes two 38% readings in 1996 and 1997.

He never would have been elected as a Muslim. Not nationally since we’re not 50 Minnesotas. His every move surely tags his as one. I don’t want to see fact check or what have you saying its disproved when he daily proves the speculation.
Honestly it would be easier if President Obama was a radical Islamist,as is he is just one of these progressive types.
Doesn’t understand that Israel is here to stay and that you need to be in a position of strength to make these kind of concessions.
That’s a GOOD sign.
The relationship between the people of the US & their Democratic dominated government is the worst EVER!!
He’s changing our image overseas alright. :)
Wonder what the liberals in Israel think of “cowboy diplomacy” now....
