A decennial tradition that dates back 220 years to the days of George Washington continues today when federal census forms start arriving at more than 120 million households across the United States.
But hanging over this 23rd U.S. census are concerns about a decline in participation.
While the U.S. census has always evoked some resentment toward the feds for poking their nose into people's business, there's a sense that America's distrust of the government has reached greater heights and could contribute to poor census returns.

I agree about the own or rent question, but the phone number would allow them to clarify an answer without the expense of sending someone out and asking whether you stay some place else would guard against counting you twice.
I don’t give out my phone number except to someone I want a call from. Besides, we don’t have a land line. I doubt I’ll be the only one not answering that one.
As for their asking about staying elsewhere, that may be their purpose but I see it as an intrusion. I’m undecided at this point whether to answer or not (my answer would be ‘No’. But I don’t like giving stuff out that is unnecessary.
And why should we believe this will be anywhere near accurate a census? After all, there’s nothing about citizenship. They’re simply counting every residence that responds. And their question about Hispanic, Latino or Spanish insures both legal and illegal responders. But there will still be a wide disparity between reported and actual numbers, IMO.

When ever I think about the census I remember reading about my ancestors in the first census of Texas 1835. They responded: 2 adults, 2 underage sons, 2 slaves, one horse and a wooden clock. The question about the clock and the horse was intrusive.
I just remember my Grandmother’s farm had a Two Holer for the women and a Two Holer for the men, down separate paths.
The family wasn’t rich but we didn’t have to wait in line! LOL ;^}
Great grandma had an indoor one out in the garage.
I remember thinking that it was the most bizarre thing I’d seen.
I don’t mind telling my race, but my phone number, whether I rent or own, and my age is irrelevant. And intrusive, IMO. And that’s about where I’ll be at when I get around to filling this out. If I do indeed leave areas unanswered, I’ll be sure no one can fill that in for me.

Question #2 is a stupid repeat of question #1! #2:"Are you sure that is everyone in your house?"
So I will probably answer #1 and #2, but that is all. Constitution only requires a count of persons at a particular address...no names, no races, etc., etc.!
BTW, I just saw the director of the census on TV saying there was only a 67% return on the last census and for them to come will cost $ 85 mil per percent point. BS. You know, I’ve seen so many tax dollars wasted by government, I think I’m going to waste some myself and not send them back the damn survey. Screw them. They piss away money on the EPA, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Energy, all the czars, all the parties at the White House- I think I’ll do my part and make them work to get the answers to question #1.
I’ve paid taxes all my life, unlike the welfare crowd, and say screw them.
