A day after House Democrats announced a ban on earmarks for private companies, their Republican counterparts hope to dramatically up the ante with a prohibition on all targeted spending projects.
House Republican leaders plan to call for an immediate, across-the-board earmark ban during a special meeting of the GOP Conference on Thursday, according to a draft of a joint leadership statement obtained by Roll Call.
Their proposed moratorium would include tax and tariff-related earmarks.
We will support changing the official rules of the House Republican Conference to incorporate such a moratorium when a special conference meeting on the matter takes place Thursday, the release said.
A majority of the Republican Conference must vote in favor of the proposal in order to change their internal rules. Republicans are scheduled to discuss the possibility of implementing the earmark ban at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Capitol Visitor Center.
Republican leaders listed on the release include: Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.), Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.), Policy Chairman Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.), Conference Vice Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.), Conference Secretary John Carter (Texas), National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas), Rules ranking member David Dreier (Calif.), Chief Deputy Minority Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) and Republican Leadership Chairman Greg Walden (Ore.).
I am so tired of the earmarks FOR ALL so darn it all get down to busness and raise your hand and say YES I WILL.
I’d be far more impressed if the House leaders demanded sh*tcanning the Dept of Education, the EPA, HUD, Fannie Mae, or any other unconstitutional money pit.
Well who would have even expected this a couple days ago.
I agree but we have to START somewhere, and this is a baby step so to speak.
true dat
These commie ba$tards are not going to get rid of earmarks! They are almost where they want to be. The country bankrupt, and the health care that they worship, almost 50% of the losers in the country on welfare.
I hate these SOB’s so much.
Rick Perry needs to stand up and tell this purple lipped POS to kiss our a$$.
Man you got that right. I’m sick and tired of Republicans fighting half-assed. If they’re going to cut spending, CUT THE MUTHA—— instead of this nickel-and-dime crap.
We saw in the snow storms how many “essential” workers there are in DC, and that included the Congressmen and Senators, and the the President himself if he didn’t
happen to work from home! lol
We’re on the brink of altering the United States via the Marxist Obamacare, our debt is exploding, and the Republicans are talking about EARMARKS!!!
I will say shyly ... it is a start .. BUT I will say LOUDLY I GET YOUR POINT :)
We could eliminate earmarks forever if we let the states keep about 85% of the revenue they generate.
Its a lot easier to decide which projects are needed when there is an exact amount of $$ available.
Not worth the effort. We need an across the board spending freeze.
Thanks, FMC. Thursdays are turning out to be GOP-Power Days!! Thanks for holding down the fort, guys!!
Oh yeah, and then they can vote to lower their own salaries and reduce their pensions. Haha. You are so idealistic!!
