Standing in the expansive basement family room of a Fulton mansion, Dr. Eric S. Wargotz explained why he thinks 2010 will be so kind to Republicans that he's got a chance to replace four- term U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, arguably Maryland's most popular Democrat.
"I'm running because I believe I can do it," said Wargotz, 53, a first-term Queen Anne's County commissioner. "I see an opening here. Look at Scott Brown," he said, referring to the once-obscure Massachusetts Republican state senator catapulted to national celebrity by winning a special election for the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's Senate seat. Wargotz said he went to Massachusetts to help in the Brown campaign's final days.
But it's not clear that all Maryland Republicans share that optimism.

Bulldog Mikulski Could get Caught Robbing Banks and still get Elected! She Has a job for life like the Pope.
If MD finally wakes up from its long liberal sleep wound be a great thing.
If she donated her daily meatball sub to a starving kid in Haiti they both would be better off
Heard on WTMJ - Milwaukee that they believe Thompson will run againt Fiengold. If He does that is a Toss up state for sure.
Any candidate has an uphill climb against Mikulski, but I don’t know how Dr. Wargotz is going to get there from here. He certainly has the type of background that would be appealing in this political environment, but his comments at CPAC about not believing Obama was born in America will make him easily smeared as a crank.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!
MD is likely not another MA. Too many minorities here who will rush to save Babs when the talking heads say that MD is a referendum on The Won.
Best opportunity for GOP pickup is if/when the seat actually becomes open. There is a long list of Dems waiting for that seat. Gansler or Van Hollen or one of those will say, so sorry Cummings/Curry, but it’s My Turn, just sit yourselves down and wait for future opportunities. That’s the recipe for Dems staying home.
