The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.
Latest statement on Hawaii:
BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

It was that action that caused so much horrible damage on Banda Aceh on the west end of Sumatra in 2004: a 20-foot high surge of water that lasted for a long period of time, literally scouring that town flat and killing over 100,000 people.
shutting down now and heading for safety. Don’t want to wait for the last minute. Aloha and thank all for caring. Talk as soon as possible , hopefully later today. FH
My granddaughter in law is there near Pearl alone..She called my daughter this morning..Navy grandson at sea.
Prayers for you and yours, Big Look.
The trolls are so thick lately you have to wade through them. It’s getting ridiculous. I guess that ad on Craig’s list for Obots got a lot of takers.
Obama made like a 30 second speech and then ran off, probably to go do some indoor golfing.
OK, thanks, the web cam is back up, it does have to be refreshed, its just a still image, the live feed cam I think will work for somebody else, I’m on a dialup.
Be safe, fish hawk!
NO inundation evacuations at 6 a.m. That’s just when the first sirens went off. They’re blowing them hourly now. TV stations with full coverage.
For the guy in Alaska asking where Kona was, look for Kailua (Kailua-Kona) on the Big Island (the island furthest south). Hilo is usually the hardest hit in this sort of thing (opposite side of the island).
All islands have been told to expect a tsunami. The shorelines are the places to avoid.
I have a friend on FB in Hawaii, she’s giving us periodic updates on the situation there...so far, people seem to be evacuating like they are supposed to. Hopefully you won’t have large groups of people staying behind ‘for the show’ who will wind up dead if some big waves DO hit the beaches!

God be with you, fish hawk.
Yeah I know bro, care to tell them its the end of civilization and they have 3 hours to repent? A sane person would at least be somewhat concerned about current events, instead of trying to whitewash a black past.
just a little troll humor...
5.9 foot waves in the Marquesas 13 minutes ago.
We’ve got a great place for “the view” about a mile from our home. It’s way high elevated with a view across the entire South Shore to Diamond Head. If the better half gets some good photos I’ll post them.
Thank you!
So I have time to order one last Mike’s chili cheese burger and garlic fries here in Eureka? (Elevation 16’)
I’m watching what looks like a guy fishing on a Kona cam in a red boat at 9:01:26
