Any geologists out there? Just curious how this plays into the Yellowstone swarms. Any connection with the three massive earthquakes in a month? Haiti, Japan and now Chile?

Heck, even New Jersey had a quake the other day. Not that it's unheard of, just odd.

CNN has more staff populating the globe...more equipment.

FOXNEWS is forced to run the same 15 second video loop OVER and OVER and OVER....

That’s a good map. Thanks for posting. My son was on the Gold Coast of Australia, but is now in Cape Town, South Africa and it doesn’t seem that they will be affected at all.

I actually think FNC is getting worse at this if thats possible. Probably depends on time of the week and location.

Having to watch cnn, too. Ick.

Same here in Lima. Such “enlightened reporters”, where’s the barf-bag? What crap Inglish TVNews. Wish FNC would get a push on to get on international to replace the klintoon/nobama chanel.

Did not feel anything in the wee hours here, would liked to have been close enough to playa to check out the wave.

A good friend of our daughter’s lives in Chillian, just north of Concepcion. Our daughter met her when she was a fellow ski instructor at Park City, UT, a few years back, and visited her there last summer. Prayers up for Zarella and her family.

I agree. When stuff happens on the weekend its impossible to get news from them. It's like they are on auto-pilot.

Hate to admit it, but CNN is excellent in their coverage. Explaining, with great detail, tsumani.

Some serious logistics problems here, getting everybody up and... where? The airports are going to be crazy.

They only need to get people along the immediate coast a few miles inland or up to higher ground. No need to actually leave the island. Tsunamis kill when you are not aware they are coming, hence the extensive Pacific tsunami alert network (the Indian Ocean had no such network in 2004, hence the millions that were surprised).

Makes a person wonder what their agenda really is, in times of catastrophe is when the real colors show. Fox, shame on you!

CNN is doing a VERY good job right now.

The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.

A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.

Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.

Latest statement on Hawaii:

BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010

TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII

SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT

A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.

SNIP

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1147Z 27 FEB 2010

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:

A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.

The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

Actually- there’s plenty they could do- get meteorologists in there or on the phone- scientists from various places- they don’t have to have on the ground coverage. CNN is simply calling reporters or connecting via social networks.

It’s not that FOX can’t cover this- look how well they did with Iran last summer. It seems willful on their part.
