I’m no earthquake expert...Lots of info on the thread though...I can tell say I was in a building, on top of a 5.7 once and thought the world was coming to an end. Can’t imagine an 8.8

A massive magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck near the coast of south-central Chile early on Saturday, shaking buildings and causing blackouts in parts of the capital Santiago, 200 miles away. A tsunami warning was issued for Chile and Peru by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, and a tsunami watch was issued for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica. Soon after, the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had generated a tsunami that may have been destructive along the Chilean coast near the epicenter. The USGS said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 34 miles at 3:34 a.m./1:34 EST. Its magnitude was initially reported at 8.3 then 8.5. An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over is classified as a "great" earthquake that can cause "tremendous damage," according to the USGS website. The earthquake that devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince on January 12 was rated at magnitude 7.0. According to a 2002 census, Concepcion is one of the largest cities in Chile with a population of around 670,000. The quake knocked out power in nearby coastal areas. People streamed onto the streets of the Chilean capital, more than 200 miles north of the epicenter, hugging each other and crying, a Reuters witness reported. Buildings shook and there were blackouts in parts of the city. The Reuters witness reported very strong shaking lasting for 10 to 30 seconds. A national emergency official told local radio the government was evaluating damage in and around Concepcion. The quake struck far from Chile's copper-producing northern region. Chile is the world's biggest producer of copper, its main export, producing about 34 percent of world supply of the metal, which is used in electronics, cars and refrigerators. In 1960, Chile was hit by the world's biggest earthquake since records dating back to 1900, USGS data shows. The 9.5 magnitude quake devastated the south-central city of Valdivia, killing 1,655 people and sending a tsunami which battered Easter Island 2,300 miles off Chile's Pacific seaboard and continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

ISLAMABAD, Feb 27 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari expressing his deep grief over the loss of precious lives caused by a severe earthquake in Chile, has conveyed the complete solidarity of the people and government of Pakistan to the people and government of Chile. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage to property caused by the severe earthquake that has hit your country,” the President said in his message to Michelle Bachelet Jeria, President of the Republic of Chile.
President Zardari assured the complete solidarity of the people and Government of Pakistan with the Chilean President, the Government and people of Chile in overcoming the effects of this enormous calamity.
“Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration”, he added.

Hundreds of tornadoes are recorded every year in the US and by luck; most of them do not cause major damage or death. Unfortunately, there have been several tornadoes that have wiped out towns and cities. Most of them were rated as F5 and F4 on the Fujita scale. The following is a list of the top five tornadoes recorded in the United States:
Number One: The Tri-State Tornado on March 18, 1925
Missouri, Illinois and Indiana were all affected by the Tri-State tornado. The funnel first touched ground in Ellington Missouri and headed eastward through Annapolis, Leadanna, Lixville, Biehle and Frohna. As the tornado left the Ozarks, it began to pick up speed. Illinois was hit the worst and suffered high death tolls in Gorham, Murphysboro, Desoto, Parrish and West Frankfort. The tornado continued through Indiana and struck the towns of Griffin and Princeton. Finally the tornado dissipated northeast of Princeton.

Number Two: The Natchez Tornado on May 7, 1840
The Natchez Tornado first touched down in Concordia Parish, Louisiana then followed the Mississippi River for 7 miles before hitting Natchez Mississippi. Most of the deaths occurred on water because many the river was busy with steamboat and barge traffic. The death toll is believed to be underestimated because this tornado occurred before the Civil War and slave deaths were not counted.

Number Three: The St. Louis/East St. Louis Tornado on May 27, 1896
The St Louis tornado struck the southwest end of the city of St Louis Missouri creating a path of destruction through the urban area. The twister then crossed the Mississippi River and hit East St. Louis in Illinois. With a large transient population living on boats on the river, the death toll may be inaccurate due the bodies washed down the river.

Number Four: The Tupelo Tornado on April 5, 1936
The Tupelo tornado first touched down near Coffeeville and skirted the center of Tupelo but destroyed residential sections of the city. This tornado spawned the deadly Gainesville tornado. The death toll may be inaccurate because African-Americans were not counted in the newspaper records.

Number Five: The Gainesville Tornado on April 6, 1936
The Gainesville tornado was actually a pair of funnels with the smaller one hitting north of the city and the larger one heading for downtown. They funnels converged in the city center and caused extensive damage to factories and businesses. A tornado touched down in Tupelo the previous day.
Death Toll: 203
Injuries: 1600
With more accurate forecasting methods and better education of the public, it is hoped that future tornadoes will produce lower death tolls.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Chile’s athletes and coaches are planning to skip the Olympic closing ceremonies following a magnitude-8.8 earthquake that has devastated their country.
Team spokesman Luis Alberto Santa Cruz said Saturday morning that the athletes and coaches are trying to get home from Vancouver as soon as possible because of the quake.
Santa Cruz says that some of the coaches and athletes have been able to reach family and so far, they have found out that their loved ones are fine. Some are still trying to make contact.

I don’t think you are right. The Mayan calendar was created in 400BC, the first book to discuss end times was Daniel which wasn’t written until 180BC.
