cash for clunkers was democratic reform at it’s finest. It ruined what was already a bad economy for the car business for a month and a half of “good” sales. It did exactly what us intelligent dealers were afraid of. Drove up used car values when they weren’t selling anyway.

cash for clunkers reminded me of:

Under FDR, six million pigs were slaughtered to stabilize prices. The pigs went to waste in times of widespread hunger.

Cattle in counties designated emergency areas, because owners were in financial straights, were gov purchased at $14 to $20 a head. Animals "the government considered unfit" for human consumption- over half at the beginning of the program - were destroyed. The poor living in shantytowns stood around and waited for the slaughter in order to take the food back to their families. However, they were held off in many cases by armed government men and the cattle were buried in pits.

The poorest of poor designated "the intended" were left out of the "cash for clunkers" program as well.
