13 Republicans cross the aisle as Senate OKs jobs bill

Reporting from Washington - The Senate on Wednesday passed a jobs bill that one senator described as "modest," but one that Democrats hope will be the first in a series of attempts to jump-start hiring nationwide. More notable, perhaps, than the bill itself was the fact that 13 Republicans crossed party lines to vote for it. The $15-billion bill passed by a 70-28 tally. The bill would grant employers a "holiday" on their 6.2% Social Security payroll contribution for every new employee hired through the rest of the year, as long as that employee has been out of work for at least 60 days. It would also make it easier for businesses to write off equipment purchases and would extend federal highway and mass-transit funding programs. "For the first time in a long time we have a bill that is supported by both Democrats and Republicans," said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said shortly before the vote, but he cautioned, "This is not a magic wand that is going to be waved and all our joblessness will decline." White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the vote proved that bipartisanship in the Senate is "possible." It also marked a victory for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has seen his chamber paralyzed by partisan warfare. Reid pushed for the vote counting on some GOP support and was rewarded earlier this week when several Republicans, including the newest senator, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, signed on...

Governor. Shake yourself. Why would she, a sitting U.S. senator, be running for a state senate office?

Which Senator wants to say they voted against a jobs bill?

What jobs bill? This bill does nothing to create jobs.

Yeah, it would have been better to let this chump change remain in one of zero’s slush funds.

As I said earlier, Bond has been fading badly down the homestretch. Thus, this kind of crap is no surprise.

You are most welcome.

He is retiring, so we here in MO are hoping for better things.

Once upon a time, Kit Bond was a pretty reliable conservative.

Because she wanted to vote yea...but knew Perry would have an ad out by 5pm letting eveyone in Tx know how she voted?

You are too right! And this ploy is so obvious, it's going to hurt her anyway.

You whine and troll every thread with your anti-GOP diatribes and your aimless complaining. What is your solution genius except curling up in the fetal position with the knowledge that you were the smartest guy in the room before your testes shrivelled up. Don’t like the GOP well then you run in your state for office, work for a conservative candidate which supports your views but for the love of G*d get a new act. I hate RINOS but like Reagan feel the party is worth salvaging To paint the whole GOP as a monolith of double crossing pseudo Democrats is intellectually lazy.

The bigger problem with a vote like this is that it emboldens the Communist.

We aren’t allowed to flame the GOP anymore. Shame on you.

Did I miss the memo? First I had to be kind to newbies. Then blog pimps. Now the GOP?

I agree but like Limbaugh I am sick of the simpeltons whose love the echo chamber of their own voices. To be the guy who whole shtick is to to be the crank, the critic, the whiner without a cause. The vote sucked, it was foolish of some of the Senators to vote for it, and take it up with them come primary time. To start the circular firing squad in the GOP is foolish, we have some tremendous battles to fight and need to muster ALL the troops.

I love Rush, but he certainly cannot exclude himself from the echo chamber.

He should be a uniter. Come on, the GOP has the RATs on the ropes, why blow it by picking on each other? Whatever has been happening is working.

Why is everyone slamming Scott Brown over this? He did what he had to do: throw a bone to MA moderates

Very well said. I hope this is the bottom line, I think it probably is. At the same time, letting people gage the mood as a merit all it's own.
