The list goes on and on how so-called esteemed scientists and scholars have been so wrong.
The one I really love is when the World Health Organization came out some years ago and reversed their position about the threat of second-hand smoke, which I've always believed to be little to none existent. Then there was the time that doctors were actually promoting certain cigarettes over others (yes, direct smoking is bad for the body).
If there is the slightest amount of risk in any endeavor, than the potential rewards should be either regulated or outlawed, according to the politician/scientist/scholar position. Guess, we shouldn't have surgery, since many die of complications every year. In fact all hospitals should be shut down since so many die from staph infections.
Forgot the particle accelerator that was suppose to cause anti-matter collide with matter and cause a black whole that would destroy our planet, if not the solar system.
