I had an uncle who flew small planes alot due to his insurance business. He used to own his own but eventually sold it when he went into semi-retirement. The last plane he rented crashed after take off when it just died in flight. He was hurt pretty bad but survived.

He said the rental planes are in no way kept up maintenance wise the way they should be according to the maint. manuals......

Can't speak to planes your uncle flew, but I've found rentals to be better maintained than some privately-owned or multi-owner planes.

Reason being that inspection and overhaul times are reached more quickly for highly-utilized rental planes, as inpections are triggered by engine time and/or calendar day requirements. Though subject to greater use, rental planes are also inspected more often than lesser-used aircraft.
