ANswering you guys here, have not read the rest of the thread.
Bayh was a Hillary supporter. He was publicly ruled out by Obama when Biden was selected. He has been trying to move the democrats to the center for months.
Filing deadline is Friday, and you have to submit 5000 signatures. Dems are going to have to scramble to find a candidate. I am not sure they will be able to do so.
Bayh has $14 million dollars. He could sit on the sidelines and then challenge for Lugar’s seat. Or he could be a kingmaker. Or (and this wouldn’t surprise me) he could challenge Obama in the presidential primaries.
One thing, for sure. By waiting so long he has really shafted the Indiana democrats, the Senate democrats, and Obama. HA!
Maybe Hillary got him to jump ship to publically derail Obama, working with her to set up a stalking horse challenge in 2012 to bobo, weaken bobo and then swoop in.
Hillary’s payback in 12 is to make sure as much damage as possible is inflicted on Obama’s administration in Nov. Bayh is a clintonite. maybe he’s been promised the vp slot from her, if he works with her.
Planning a challenge to Obama makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is that he’d screw over the Dems by leaving them no time to field a candidate. He’d be persona non grata. Not a good way to launch a presidential bid. Unless they’ve already fielded a candidate before today’s announcement...which is my suspicion.
Baron wanted it, now he'll be flushed out of the pocket to run against Coats.
Thanks for your analysis, Miss Marple. As always, great to read the political views of a Hoosier.
I knew you'd have some inside info and reliable opinions.
For the first time I like Bayh. Shafting Obama is sweet! :)
This reminds me of the Toricelli late departure (albeit, not for the same reasons). Then, the Democrats made an argument that the slate HAD to have a Democrat listed to give the Democrats someone to vote for. Will be interesting to see how Indiana handles this.
