I also looked at the literature books that have recently been adopted. My state, Virginia, generally uses books Texas chooses as opposed to California. The literature book is from Prentice Hall, and it is the same one I teach from. I can tell you that it contains no references to "global citizen" and has a good selection of literature. One of the poems I have a beef with though. They published "Ring out Wild Bells" by Tennyson, but left out the last stanza which goes

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be

This ended up being a very good conversation about the honesty of printing the poem without an indication that it was excerpted and missing the last stanza. Was this censorship? Why did they leave it off? Would that stanza offend? Did it change the meaning of the poem?

Very insightful answers. 8th graders are smarter than people give them credit for being.
