DeMint says he will stay neutral in McCain-Hayworth primary race
The Hill ^ | 12/10/10 | Mike Obrien

Sen. Jim DeMint said Wednesday that he won't endorse a candidate in Arizona's contested Republican primary.

DeMint will stay neutral in the primary race between Sen. John McCain (R) and former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R), who will wage a primary challenge from the senator's right.

"I'm going to stay neutral in Arizona," DeMint said during an appearance on Fox News.

DeMint has shown a willingness to dabble in primaries with his Senate Conservative Fund, which has backed some more conservative Senate candidates in races over more establishment candidates. DeMint's group has backed former state House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) over Gov. Charlie Crist (R) in Florida, for instance, and backed Chuck DeVore over Carly Fiorina in California.

Yep. Looks like the dividing line might be whether the RINO to oppose is a sitting Senator, though I don’t know enough of his endorsements to confirm that.

Disappointed that DeMint is not supporting the conservative candidate over Hanoi John McCain.

Sitting on the fence is never a sign of good leadership....

A non-endorsement of a long-time Senate colleague like McCain is essentially a quite endorsement of Hayworth, IMHO.

It beats the heck out of endorsing the RINO, however.

Arizona is a People’s Republic on to itself. In fact Palin’s support of McLame is considered to be an important negative among some of the local, “less conservative” demographic that had been his base in the past...

He’s leaving ol’ Johnny twistin’ in the wind is good enough endorsement for me.

More money bombs for DeVore would be nice!

Go JD!

IMHO, most of the big dogs should stay out of Party preferential primary battles. Let ‘e m fight it out among themselves, the winner being decided by the voters.

I agree, though still a bit disappointed.

Probably for the best. Nothing to be accomplished by publicly throwing rocks at McCain while he’s on good behavior.

Here’s hoping the people of AZ do the right thing.

GO JD!!!

You mean liberals are gonna vote for Hayworth because they hate Sarah?!? Man, we really ARE winning everywhere everyway.

I think that's the right interpretation, too, and probably some recognition of what a vengeful, backstabbing sort Juan could be if he should, to our detriment, make it back to the Senate.

Go J. D.

No worries. DeMint is all but admitting that McCain will lose. He does not want to endorse a turkey a la NY-23.

McCain has got so many strikes against him that he is gone. Not to mention his wife who is off on the gay thing in California and his daughter who is destroying him with the tea party movement. Basically these two women are shredding his base for him. He has no base.

Senator JD Hayworth will be in the next Congress.
