GB is tucked in sort of under and behind the liver, and bowel is below. Considering the size of Murtha's pork-loving gut, his bowel was probably snug up against the liver and GB, and may be the reason the bowel was nicked. Or it could have been nicked when the laparascopic instruments were entered in through the several small incisions.

It's one of the risks of that surgery; Murtha was no doubt told of possible complications and signed his consent for surgery.

Peritonitis, a painful way to go. Lots of American troops were gut-shot by Murtha and Code Pink's "insurgent" pals in Irag; some dying from peritonitis as well. Almost poetic.
