EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION?.....

NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft is tracking four active regions strung across the eastern hemisphere of the sun. Click on the image below to set the scene in motion--and keep an eye on number 4.
The movie shows an eruption of unstable magnetic loops. The blast occured around 0130 UT on February 5th and it appears to have hurled some material in the general direction of Earth. Images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) are not yet available to evaluate that possibility. Stay tuned for updates in a few hours.

USUALLY, this kind of thing comes from a sunspot, and Sol has been spotless for many months.

If the moon is made of green cheese, is the sun made of mint jelly?

There have been 5 or 6 sunspots over the last few months, the sun has not been quiet at all.

The animation looks kind of weird. First something happens in the solar atmosphere, then the ball turns, then another shift in the atmosphere, and so on.

Unless the ejecta takes two years to get here (2012), I’m not worried!

Could it be just the first of a series of solar spitballs?

Believe those images are looking at the back side of the sun. The front side has had very weak activity the past few days. Was more active a couple weeks ago when the Sunspot number was 40. Currently at 11. Very weak. Perhaps they are referring to this note from the Solar Cycle 24 site
There will be a small (30%) chance for minor geomagnetic storming around Feb 7 because of a Coronal Hole solar wind stream flowing from the sun as well as possible effects due to a small CME on Feb 2. Stay Tuned.
At any rate, it was small and minor. We got months ways to go before our sun starts getting real mean again, assuming its activity peaks strongly.
