Dave Mason: "We Just Disagree"

Partial lyrics:

So let's leave it alone, 'cause we can't see eye to eye. There ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys. There's only you and me and we just disagree. Ooo - ooo - ooohoo oh - oh - o-whoa

“So Long Self” by MercyMe

It’s described as a breakup song with yourself. Christians will understand.

Well if I come across a little bit distant
It’s just because I am
Things just seem to feel a little bit different
You understand
Believe it or not but life is not apparently
About me anyways
But I have met the One who really is worthy
So let me say

So long, self
Well, it’s been fun, but I have found somebody else
So long, self
There’s just no room for two
So you are gonna have to move
So long, self
Don’t take this wrong but you are wrong for me, farewell
Oh well, goodbye, don’t cry
So long, self

Stop right there because I know what you’re thinking
But no we can’t be friends
And even though I know your heart is breaking
This has to end
And come to think of it the blame for all of this
Simply falls on me
For wanting something more in life than all of this
Can’t you see

So long, self
Well, it’s been fun, but I have found somebody else
So long, self
There’s just no room for two, so you are gonna have to move
So long, self
Don’t take this wrong, but you are wrong for me, farewell
Oh well, good-bye, don’t cry
So long

Don’t feel so bad (don’t feel so bad)
There’ll be better days (there’ll be better days)
Don’t go away mad (but by all means)
Just go away,go away

So long, self
Well, it’s been fun, but I have found somebody else
So long, self
There’s just no room for two, so you are gonna have to move
So long, self
Don’t take this wrong, but you are wrong for me, farewell
Oh well, good-bye, don’t cry
So long self
farewell, goodbye (so long self)

My favorite “breakup” song is “Together” by the Miami Royal Palm Orchestra, from 1928. A British version from the same year by Ray Starita is available here. A more recent song in that category that I like is Bazoom, a bestseller from 1954 by The Cheers.

Below are some other great songs in this genre.

  1. Who’s Blue Now? --Waring’s Pennsylvanians, 1928

  2. Who’s Sorry Now?--Marion Harris, 1923

  3. The Song is Ended--Ruth Etting, 1927

  4. C. C. Rider Blues—Ma Rainey & Her Georgia Jazz Band, 1925
(I also like the version by Bea Booze from 1943)

  5. Thanks for the Memory--Bob Hope & Dorothy Lange, 1938

  6. Lawdy, Miss Clawdy—Lloyd Price, 1952

  7. I Went to Your Wedding--Patti Page, 1952

  8. Maybe You’ll Be There--Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra, 1948

  9. It’s Almost Tomorrow--The Dream Weavers, 1955
(That's a group from Coral Gables, Fla., not a computer program)

  10. Tear Drops--Lee Andrews & the Hearts, 1958

Got along without you before I met you, Gonna get along without you now.

Can't remember who sang it, but it was popular in summer of 1952. I was in ROTC summer camp in Valdosta, GA. Hot as the hinges of Hell. We'd come in from marching or whatever, head straight for the shower, strip off our fatigues, and shower, while singing that song. Crazy? Probably, but I still can't take a shower without thinking of that song.
